The Lucknow Sentinel, 1979-09-12, Page 10Page 1O—Leknow Sentinel, Wednesday, September 12, 1979 mishaw heads Society 'The Lucknow Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society had an executive meeting ' on Monday, September 10. The meeting was to help the transition from the old executive to the new, executive, to finalize preparations for the Lucknow Fall Fair, and to plan for the coming year. The new executive is as rollows: Past President - Margaret Hamilton; 'resident - William lunshaw; Secretary - ir et ta Johnston; ireasurer - Margaret Corrin; Service to Patients - Bonnie Ackert; Transportation - Wes Young; Special Events - Roberta Whytock; Campaign - Anna Kreutzweiser and Mildred Loree and Education - unfilled. Members of the outgoing executive are helping .the • incoming executive to accustom themselves to their duties. These include helping cancer patients with dressings, drugs, home visiting, nursing service, lodge ae- commodation, and transportation to clinics • in Wingharn and to hospitals in London. Also there are special events to inform people of the work of the Canadian Cancer Society and to educate people about cancer. The campaign raises money for research (57, percent), service to patients (14 percent), education (12 percent), lodges (6 percent), ad- ministration (6 percent), and fund raising (5 percent). Plans for the Lucknow Fall Fair were finalized. Films will be shown, largely aimed at children who have provided most of the audience in former years. There will be in- formation about the work of: the Canadian Cancer Society. Prizes will be given to children who have made greeting cards and tray favours for _patients ; entries will • be displayed at the fair. There was discussion of the unfilled position of Education Chairman. The basic principle upon which the Canadian Cancer Society was founded was education of the public. The Society aSsunied the respon- sibility of bringing to the people a message of hope if they would but go to see their doctors when the _first symptoms of cancer appear. Names were suggested for Education Chairman; •these people will be approached and asked to serve. Plans were made for this year. One aim is for the Lucknow Branch to let people know we are here and to know how we can help them. We will be trying to advertise • ourselves and will be having several special events for the. public. A coffee house, daffodil tea, and forum were discussed.. We •will probably be having a coffee house such as we • had last autumn. • Education supervisor speaks to Holyrood WI The Holyrood Womens Institute met on Thur7 sday evening at the hall when Teeswater Lucknow and Kairshea .Institutes were guests and .the guest speaker was :Mr. Ron Clarke, Supervisor of Special Education of Bruce .County,' • • He brought some in- teresting information and talked on the siscipline of children this being . the International year of .the child, and hada question• .N and answer period. The president, .Mrs, Alex • Percy, was in charge of a , short business ' period .with Mrs, John Scott reading the minutes and • givilig •the ; financial ,report. • The next 4-H co• unse will be on needlepoint. The rally will be on October 18 with Mrs. John Scott and Mrs. Tom McPherson delegates. On 'September 19 • 'T. • Teeswater will be having a meeting of the district, when Mts. CGIT had its first fall meeting with 12 girls present. A new leader, Barbara Hen- derson, and five new members were in- troduced. Many,special activities are planned for this year. • A Tri -.County Girls' Rally will be held in Listowel on October 13. The girls are planning another Rockathon with proceeds for their foster child and special donations to UNICEF. In June 1980 • there wilt be a jamboree for all - CGIT group1n Ontario. • Kay Morrison reported on her: Camp • Council experience. Weather permitting the group will have a hike and cook -out at Kay's fainn •next Monday. , • • All girls from Grade 6 • up are welcome to join in the fun .and fellowship of this group Two attend training camp • • • Mary Eadip of Kinloss and Roger Mor- rison of West Wawanosh attended the • Provincial Junior Farmer Leadership Train- ing Camp at Bark Lake in Haliburton County the week of September 2 - '9. • Mary, a member of the Ripley Junior Partners, is one of four young people representing Bruce County at the camp. r' Roger is one of three from Huron County to attend the camp with some 80 delegates from across Ontario. He is a member of the West Huron Junior Farmers. During the ' week, each member is expected to provide leadership to the pro- gram •in •various ways, whether it be planning the evening social event or yes– pers, sharing a camping skill or working on other 'activities. ) • "Personal" leadership develo'pment is stressed through discussion and group experiences. $essions on • communication, program planning, legure activity and other topics of importance to local Junior Farmer Clubs are a key part of the &imp, On their return home delegates ate expected to use their new skills and abilities in COnin'itinity and Junior Fanner programs.
