Visit with Friends
The Lucknow Friends
Worship Group (Quaker)had
a visit from some travelling
friends, Ben and Muriel
Gough-azmier of Victoria,
B.C. and Deborah Haight of
Ottawa when they met at the
home of Sid and. Pat Duggan
for supper on Tuesday, Aug-
ust 28.
They had been to the.
Canadian Friends Yearly
Meeting at Pickering College
in Newmarket from August
13 - 19, and took this oppor-
tunity to travel around south-
ern Ontario visiting friends
and sharing the concerns
raised for discussion at the
Yearly Meeting. They also
brought regards from friends
at other meetings.
Following supper the
group had a hort meeting
forwership and discussion of
Friends' concerns. They dis-
cussed, A New Call to Peace-
making, an effOrt to involve
Friends, Mennonites and
various churches in the pro-
motion of peace.
One of the main areas .of
• concern has been the means
of peace taxation rather than
war taxes. Money would be
allocated for peace efforts,
through taxation rather -than
war hardware and training
for war preparedness. The
individual would be allowed
to choose whether his tax
money would be allocated to
peace making or war prepar-
edness. At present, a certain
percentage of the money
paid by an individual is auto-
matically put towards war
tactics.
Another concern discussed
was the subject of the' crim-
inal justice system and the
need for it to be more rehab-
ilitative rather than simply
punitive. The system as it
exists concentrates on rejec-
tion of the criminal by society
when there is a , need to
prepare the criminal for his
return to society. There
should be a recognition that
the penal system only deals
with the final stages ,of social
neglect.
The global political re-
fugee problem was also con-
sidered. At the Yearly Meet-
ing the concern of the,
Canadian double standard
with respect to refugees was
emphasized. Political. refu-
gees
from Argentina and
Chile for example, are not
being accorded the same
consideration by the Canadi-
an government as Southeast.
Asian refugees. The group.
