Judy McMichael of Dungannon says her customers have been very encouraging since she opened her store on Hamilton Street, three weeks ago. They are grateful we have opened the store because they won't have to drive to . Stratford ' or Kincardine to buy natural foods, says Judy. Jana Health Foods offers a variety of flours, beans, grains, legumes, oils, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, pasta, cheeses, goat's milk, spices, herbs, herbal teas, granolas, bulk peanut butter, local honey, apple butter, molasses, Perth County and Astro yogurt, and vitamins. Judy also has a selection of wicker and children's wooden toys for sale in the store and she sells folkwear patterns for the home sewer. She has cookbooks for cooking with health foods and other books for reading interest. Judy and her husband, Art, have found the use of health foods in their diet has cut down on the cost of groceries because buying in bulk is cheaper than buying packaged foods. Unrefined foods are tastier says Judy and better for you, because they are grown without chemicalsand there areno preser- vatives added. There is more bulk to a health food diet and you don't eat as much. Art has lost about 50 pounds since he started eating health foods. You eat less meat says Judy but you don't have to become vegetarian to enjoy health foods. Health foods aren't new according to ▪ Judy. "It's really going back to the same way of eating as our grandparents." Many of the products are the same as thosepurchased in a grocery store except they are unrefined. The shelf life of health foods is shorter because there are no preservatives added, but you can buy in bulk so you buy as much as you can use before its shelf life ends. Health foods are what their name implies - healthy - because the vitamin content isn't lost through refining. Judy decided to open the store because she had experience working with a friend who has a health food store in Marlbank, near Belleville. A former teacher, she wanted to return to work fulltime and found it impossible to return to teaching because there are surplus teachers. The store will allow Art to work in the business while he is laid off from his construction job during the winter. Judy says the area is open .toa natural foods baker or a restaurant. A bakery in Sebringville is moving to Quebec and this' is the only one in the area., Judy says she wants her customers to suggest what they would like'to see supOlied in the store and she wants to sell as many local products, such as honey, as she can. These display shelves for: buckets of dried fruit, nuts and beans and the bins for flours and grains make shopping at Jana Health Foods conv'enlent.
