(Don Hall Photo) • • ' _ _ _ ; I t l To the farm for the holidays BY DON HALL Farm vacations in Europe and the British Isles .have long been popular as a low cost fOrm of holidaying but are just starting to gain a foothold in North America. In Holyrood, Helen and Lloyd Ackert are • turning their love of people and rural lifestyle into a real alternative to the high-priced, harried vacations often forced upon urbanites. They just started advertising this year with brochures and classified notices but are already getting calls for the fall and have had some holidayers this summer. Their large Bavarian -style home is situated in a wooded grove overlooking a 21/2 -acre man- made lake on the family farm. Their son, John, and his wife Joy, now operate the 600 -head operation and guests are invited to watch the daily feeding and care of the animals. For many who have never seen the first steps of • food production, every operation on the farm is •interesting and unusual. - The lake, well -stocked with rainbow trout since it was installed two years ' ago, has already attracted frogs, turtles and a Great. Blue Heron. Guests are, invited to fish, swim or • paddle about on the 'lake. Lloyd said, "We had often wished we were in the tourist business and always wanted to do something of that sort. Last winter, we decided we could live here, help John farm and be in the vacation business all at the same time.'' --Bruceland Farm, is a member of the Ontario Vacation Farm Association; whose members include 27 vacation farms throughout Ontario. "It's changed our lifestyle in that when people are here, you're busy and tied: down," said Lloyd. "Helen in particular bears the brunt with the cooking and all but we like it." "I find , it all Very interesting,. meeting • people," said Helen. "The area is rich in antique and auction sales, theatre and the entire lake area and towns. It's quiet but there are things to do at the same time, said ,Lloyd. He said people coming 2- – up and discovering the area makes it more enjoyable 'for their hosts as well. "It's a positive thing," he said. Meals are served in 'a dining room overlooking the lake and the large living room • has a -full -wall fireplace for relaxation. A day room, well -stocked with books and, games, is provided for the privacy of guests., "Guests Want to be part of the family but they want to have some privacy, too," said Lloyd. "Some want to spend all their time With you While others prefer to be off and about." Lloyd and Helen tried farm vacations thethselvesto get eXperiencein the business before setting up their own operation. They feel costs to travel, staying in molls and eating in restaurants, are far too high. "With a farm vacation, we can charge less and s.till make good money: People can Vacation on a farm at one-third to 6i16 -half the cost of regular places," said Lloyd. - The farm is, open year round with weekly and weekend packages available. Accomodations are not provided for childten. TENDERS FOR •WINTER MANAGER FORIIICKNOWARENA- • Tendered weekly salary to include all necessary assistants.
