Demand for foster farnilies
BY DOROTHY SIMPSON.
CHILDREN'S MD SOCIETY
Removing a child from his
home is not common practice
at the Children's Aid but for
the safety of the - child in
some instance's, it must be
done. The need for foster
homes is increasing as the
present ones are diminish-
ing. The children are the
ones suffering by the lack of
foster facilities.
A foster home is selected
to provide the proper care for
the child. The family may
'decide that they want to care
for young children, teenag-
ers or any child needing care.
The family provides a place
for the child' to develop a.
fresh understanding of life.
The child will see a different
family relationship than they
had at home. For some of
these children, discipline is
an obstacle they've never
had to deal with. A foster
family may find it difficult to
relate to these children at
first but after they have an
understanding of the child,
they can relate to the actions
more.
The legal jurisdiction is on
the foster parents but with-
out family support the benef-
its to the child would de-
crease. •A foster parent is
paid for the support 4:g the
child. In some cases the child
needs clothing, dental, and
medical care, education and
recreational activities. The
foster parents are to treat the
child in the manner their
feelings best describe under
the supervision of the Child-
ren's Aid•worker. 'The worker
must explain to the foster
parents anything that will
help them deal with the
child, It mustbe keaWmind
by the agency that 'This home
cannot become too disrupted
or it won't be beneficial to
either parties.
Not all children are dis-
ruptive. In fact, only •a few,
cause problems, but a foster
family should not be discour-
aged. Some of the children
have poor eating and health
habits which require special
encouragement. It takes a
considerable amount of pati-
ence and time to be foster
parents. The need for these
facilities and the controlled
people to help a child is at its
peak. The response from this
area towards fostering has
become apparent with the
lack of foster homes.
If you can see room in your
home to help one child, that
would be one more than is
now being helped. Parenting

•a child is hard, especially a
child that lacks respect. It
takes a special person to care
fOr a child in their home. To
some it might seem wrong •to
take a- child from their home
' but it is also wrong for that
home to take the child from
hims,elf. Fostering is a means
of supplying the child with
settled home atmosphere un-
til they can be returned to
theirs with a better under-
standing of life.
