Diamond drills have pas-
sed the 300) metre mark in a
granite rock formation near
Atikokan, Ontario, as scient-
ists continue their research
Work into disposal of Can-
ada's nuclear fuel wastes.
Drilling began on July 15,
1479 at Atikokan following
• s'veral weeks of surface t
exploration and mapping by
geological crews from the
Geologic Survey of Canada..
In early July, etperts arrived
at the site to study these
•maps • and to determine
where drilling should take
place in order to obtain the

tr AXitlit1111 information on the
movement of groundwater
along fractures deep in the
rock.
• The research being con-
ducted in the Atikokan area
is a part' of an „extensive
research program ' designed
to determine if large under-
ground mountains of rock,
known as plutons, will be
suitable for disposing of nuc-
lear wAstes. The wastes
would be made highly insol-
uble, sealed in corrqion-
resistant containers and plac-
ed in a vault' 500 to 1,000
metres below the surface.
The research work in the
•
Atikokan area is proceeding
with the agreement of the
local council, and provincial
and federal governments.
• Drilling has also been
underway "at two other re-
search sites -- the Whiteshell
Nuclear Research Establish-
ment at Pina%va, Manitoba
and Chalk River Nuclear
Laboratories in the Ottawa
• At the Whiteshell site,
hydrogeologists are now
studying possible water
moverhent through the rock
by injecting water under
pressure into the boreholes,
