Two ..Loatian young people . arrived at
Toronto airport on. Friday, July 13 to begin a
new life in Canada: •
Hyng Ngoc Dimh, -19 and his sister Liey
Thi Dimh, . 16,. are being sponsored. by
Herman and Cornelia de Bruyn, concession
13 of East Wawanosh` Township.
They arrived from Bangkok after spending
time ina refugee camp ,in Thailand.
Although they speak very little English, the
de Bruyn's son, . Vincent believes Hyng
swam across a river to escape Laos. There
were 30 children in the group who tried to
swim the river to get out,. only Hyng and two
others made it.
They do not know how. Liey got out of Laos
to the camp in Thailand:
Hyng and: Liey are picking up English
quickly and Hyng knows some French. The
de Bruyns have been able to learn more
about their new fancily through Mrs. de'.
Bruyn's brother, Harry Vali der Heist who
speaks some French. Harry is visiting with
the de Bruyns from New Zealand.

refugees in March before the pathetic
situation of f the Vietnamize boat people was
well publicized and Canadians started to
sponsor them.
The de Bruyns attended a meeting, of the
area Catholic Church parishes in Wingham
last January when they. learned about
sponsoring` refugees from Laos who were
living in refugee camps in Thailand. \'rt'hey
learned how to apply, to become sponsors
through Brian ven Hove from the Jesuit
seminary . in , Toronto, Mr. ven Hove is
associated with Terra des..hommes, an
Ottawa organization which works through
tie United Nations. The organization works
with Unesco and specializes in bringing
refugeechildren to Canada.
The de Bruyns . applied to become
sponsors through\ the immigration depart-
ment
epartment in Kitchener. . They were screened by
the immigration officials before being
accepted. They had to provide information
about • their background, their ability to
support refugees and their . pla»ns for the
refugees when they arrived::
The de Bruyns asked ' to sponsor two
members of one;,family., They sent in their
application the end of March and then were
informed they would be receiving a brother,
and sister.. .
When they went to the airport to meet the
plane they had only., the names of the
refugees who were to find a home with them.
Mr. de Bruyn was upset with theimmigra-
tion. official at the airport. He usheredthe
refugees into a room where their sponsors
were waiting, and announced, "Here they
are, take your pick." Mr. de Bruyn said his
attitude was similar to a man dealing with a
bunch of cattle. '
They went from refugee to refugee asking
if their names were Hyng and Liey and.
identified their new family when Hyng
nodded upon hearing his naine.
The de+, Bruyns realize there may be
difficulties in sponsoring refugees. They
' know they may encounter racist attitudes
and they admit they didn't know what to
expect. Says Mrs. de Bruyn, "You k"now you
