Fay -mets want energy centres on. food lands halted
The Food Land Steering
Committee has written a
letter to the Honourable
James Auld, Minister of
Energy calling for a new
direction in energy planning.
The Committee has en-
dorsed a recommendation by
the Royal Commission on
Electric Power Planning that
calls for small generating
stations (200 - 400 MW) near
urban loads. The Committee
is opposed to completing the
huge (2500 - 3000 MW)
Bruce B generating station in
the heart of Southwest Ont-
ario's food land.
Ir The Committee is made up
of 7 farm groups; including
the Ontario Institute of Agro-
logists, the Ontario Federa=
tion of Agriculture, the Na-
,,.
tional Farmers Union and the
Christian Farmers Federa-
tion of Ontario.
"We compliment Dr. Ar-
thur Porter and his fellow
Commissioners on the wis-
dom with which they have
collected their information
and made their recommenda-
tions," says Lloyd Moore,
Listowel Chairman of the
farm group.
"We are pleased that this
document indicates that the
Royal Commission is doing
much more than extrapolat-
ing the pregent. A real effort
is being made to look into the
future.
"We believe that there is
room for both agriculture and
energy. production in Ont-
ario.
ntario. But the two are not
Sherwood Picnic
in Belgrave
The eighteenth. annual re-
union of the descendants of
the. late Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
G. Sherwood was held at the
Women's Institute Hall, Bel -
grave on Sunday, July 15,
with a good attendance.
Grace was sung, after
which everyone enjoyed a
bountiful noon lunch. This
was followed by a short
business period.
Myrtle Johnstone had a
display of family pictures,
clippings and. information
she has collected through the
years. This proved most
interesting. Myrtle gave a
short talk on the. Sherwood
family history which sheis
compiling. A moment's sil-
ence was observed in mem-
ory of those who are •no
longer with us.
A sing song of old favour-
ites was enjoyed.
Games and contests were
in charge, 'of Helen and
Dianne -Thornton. Prizes
were awarded to Nicole Mc-
Kenzie, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Murray McKenzie, 'for
the youngest present; to
Mrs. Marie Morrison forthe
eldest; guessing the number
of buttons in a jar, Kenneth
Hutchison; the person up the
earliestthat morning, Mrs.
Dan McInnes; birthday dos-
est to the date of the ,picnic,
Mrs. Gordon Johnstone.
Races for the juniors were
always compatible, especial-
ly, when Targe energy cen-
tres .and transmission lines
are involved.
"We share the view that
there is time to look at alter-
natives and consider new
directions. Present directions
were based on poor fore-
casting. We have argued for
5 years that Ontario Hydro's
forecasts are wrong. They
won by Laura McKenzie,.
Karen McInnes and Martin
McKenzie. Senior girls win-
ning were Mae' Hutchison,
Dianne and Shirley Thorn-
ton. Senior boys winning
were Murray Thornton, Dale
McInnes and Donald Thorn-
ton tied, Bob McInnes.
Prizes for . other games
were: throwing the' frisbee,
boys, Kenneth Hutchison,
Murray Thornton, Bob McIn-
nes and Donald •Thornton;
throwing the frisbee, girls,
Shirley Thornton, Nancy Mc-
Innes, Dianne Thornton;
penny relay, Donald Thorn-
' ton's team; kick the slipper,
ladies, Dianne Thornton,
Nancy McInnes, Mrs. John
Thornton; kick the shoe,
men, Dale. McInnes, Bob Mc-
Innes, Kenneth Hutchison:
The games finished with a
gum scramble.
Myrtle Johnstone and.
Mrs. Dan McInnes were re-
elected as president and sec-
retary -treasurer .respective-
ly. Next year's lunch com-
mittee is. Mrs. Wm. McInnes
and Mrs. John ' Thornton;
sports committee, Bob and
Dale McInnes; program com-
mittee, Mrs. Dan ,McInnes
and Nancy McInnes.
It was decided to hold the •
picnic in the same ' location
next year on the third Sunday
in July with lunch at one
o'clock.
have now been shown to be
wrong. This requires that
past decisions be reviewed
and a new direction set."
The Committee's letter to
the Hon. James Auld includ-
es the following recommen-
dations:
"We should .produce our
electric power within our
urban centres and thus use
the heat now being wasted at
Bruce Generating Station for
district heating. This means
more small units and an, end
of the massive construction
at Bruce. Specifically units 7
and 8 should be cancelled for
the above reason and in view
of the fact that ,transmission
for the production from these
units will be tremendously
difficult to get. We even
question the validity of com-
pleting units 5 and 6. The
projected demand for which
it was approved will not
develop. Adequate transmis-
sion is not available."
