The two companies, Crawford Alli- ed Industries Ltd. and Superior Sand and Gravel, have appealed the Gov- ernment's licensing decision and, since November, have been fighting their case before the provincial Environmental Appeal Board. The 'hearings probably will be completed some time in the fall. The Ontario Environmental Assess- ment Board rejected the firms' proposal to create a landfill operation on, 600 acres of largely worked -out sand and gravel pits on Keele Street at .Maple, just north of Toronto, in April of 1978. Charged along with Crawford and Superior is another company, Refluent Investments. Limited, which carries on business under the name of A & A Liquid Waste Removal Co., and an individual, Murray K. Roberts. Rent review will remain indefinitely in Ontario, although allowable rent increases could g higher than the existing sii " per -bent,--un'd'er steps• • taken this week by a committee studying new -landlord-tenant legisla- tion. The Cabinet has been given the power to raise or lower the six per cent limit on rent increases as early as January 1, 1980. The Minister of Natural Resources introduced the Aggregates Act, as a result of the Report of the Ontario Mineral Aggregate Working Party as submitted to the Minister •in Decem- ber, 1976. The Working Party was established to recommend an effective and broad- ly acceptable mineral aggregate re- source management policy for the Province of Ontario. Many of the features of the Report and of this Bill are the result of the experience gained by the various interests concerned with The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971. The new Act has three purposes: 1. To provide for the management of the aggregate and Crown aggregate resources of Ontario. 2. To control and regulate pits and quarries, wayside pits and quarries and Crown aggregate pits and quar- ries. 3. To require the rehabilitation of land from which aggregate or Crown aggre- gate has been excavated. This act isi lengthy, and I am sure, will be somewhat controversial in some of its proisions. It will not be passed' before -the, summer break. The Ontario Government should sue Reed Ltd. to establish the company's Carling sponsors Blyth fiddle festival The Blyth Centre for, the Arts has received a grant for $500 .from the Carling Community Arts Foundation to help defray: the costs of the. Centre's second annual Fiddle and Step dance. estival held June 1 81-2 in the Blyth Memorial Hall. The. Carling Community Arts Foundation was establishedto encourage events of multi -cultural significance. Ed Paquette, regional representative of the Carling Foundation, delivered a cheque to Jan Dutton, administrator of the Festival .with wishes for the continued success of the Festival. This . year's fiddle festival built on last year's success by at- tracting over one hun- dred competitors and, near capacity crowds, for. both nightsof com- petition. Dancers. and fiddlers came frog» as far away as . Sarnia, Kit- chener and London to compete. Over $1,000 in. prize money was distributed to winners in eight categories. The.. surnme:r season of the Blyth Centre for the Arts Festival opens June 29 with "This . Foreign Land". Tickets and reservations are available from the box office by calling 523-9300. Study effect of gas . from landfill sites The effects of gas which can originate from ..waste buried in landfill sites are being studied by an Environ- ment Ontario research team. The Ministry is directing a three-year, $287,500 project funded by the Provincial Lottery, Environment Min - Aster Dr. Harry C. Parrott announced today. "This project is an exten- sion of my Ministry's contin- uing efforts to find better and new ways to manage all forms of waste," said Dr. Patrott.. - The project is focused' on the possible effects of waste -generated gas on land and buildings adjacent to landfill sites. A contract for the project has been awarded to Hydrology Consultants Limited of Missisauga as the prime consultant, and $145,000 has been provided for the first phase. "New information we ob- tain will assist in planning the establishment of struct- ures near completed landfill sites." 1 After an assessment of all. past research on the subject, Hydrology Consultants Lim- ited will.; elect various sites, of different geological, clim- atic and moisture conditions and of different age, size, depth and type. responsibility for mercury pollution from. its Dryden pulp and' paper mill, a senior provincial official suggested this week. Duncan Allan, assistant deputy minister of Industry and Tourism, said the action may be a way to establish the legal liability a prospective buyer of the plant could expect to assume in taking it over. He told the Legislature's standing committee on resources development that Government officials have spoken to five potential buyers who are worried about being held accountable for mercury pollution discharged until 1975 into. the English-Wabigoon river system. The committee has been struggling with what to do about Reed and the future of Dryden, a one -industry town in Northwestern Ontario. Originally, it was to examine pollution control deadlines for.the firm, but that issue has been overshadowed by the need to make certain a pulp and paper company survives in the area. A federal investigation has been launched into reports that fluoride pollution on Cornwall Island' from a 'U.S. aluminum smelter . has been. killing cows, vegetation and impairing thehealth of Indians on the island. Environment Minister Harry Panrr6t, when questioned as to whether testing ' has been done on the island and whether results are available regard- ing the health of children there, has • promised to report back to the Legislation when this information is available.
