speech - he•suffered from verbal diarrhea. Although
he spent far too much money on booze he was
reluctant to give his wife anything over and above the
egg and cream money - hardly enough to keep body
and soul together, never mind providing thepoor lady
with any new clothing to replace her shabby attire. It
ishardto understand why she stayed with Windy - he
treated her as though she were a slave and in his
drunken stupors, made her life a'complete misery.
•• There must be a better way to live, Lizzie Perkins
• told herself over and over again - there must be some
• escape from the man she secretly detested. She had
•no children. If only she could find enough money to
• get a startin some other Place, far away from Windy,
his drunken ravings and tight fisted meanness. Lizzie
decided •thalsomehow she would get the money, and
shake the dust of Redtrees from her. feet.
• She had tried to collect a tew dollars previously by
growing cucumbers, withholding some of the money
,. from the pickle 'factory, but Windy had checked out
• her dealings and in a furieus temper made her cough
up the differegogitnce ahe had started a little savings
account at th . ank, but even the bank tellers were
not prone to keep a confidence and Windy made her
withdraw the money - he had a use for it as ari
additional thirst quencher;
There Was no ornament, nook, or cranny that was
safe from Windy's grubby fingers and Lizzie told.
• herself that. if she accumulated anything; she would
• have to find a new: hiding place. She had a flash of
•, genius when she looked at the remains of an old
Chevy hardtop, rusting amongst the wild .grass and
golden rod. The seats, although worn werestill intact
• - who would ever think of searching amongst .the
• upholstery for money? Well, Lizzy considered she had
found .the place to deposit anything. she -could-glean
towards her. escape - all she needed now was the
actual green stuff!'
• 'When Windy was in the Pedtrees Hotel, which
happened .to be every afterhoon• except Sunday, Lizzie
was free from .her tormentor - almost six hours in
which to make a little money. She Would fieve.,,,biefi:

. On the 'Friday afternoon:a140-end ot the first week,
•While Windy; vyas still telling his atrociouslies in the
• Ftedtrees Hotel, Lizzie made her first deposit in the
old Chevy strong box. She placed a$10 bill, in a brown
paperbag and crept stealthily to the old car. She cast.
her eyes across the countryside before she opened the
door - .one could never be sure who would be
watching'. At least she was free frOM the main peeper
of the cornitninity COlin Andereon' was in the
Pantown Hospital with some weird disease,.
LizZie removed a feW Old sacks and a threadbare tire
. from the batk seat. With a kitchen knife., sherhade an
•incision in the cover and groped her way into the
• interier,' depositing the paper bag well inside the
upholstery. She replaced the sacks andJtire,, and
• restored the back of the car to its original. untidness.
For three months, Lizzie faithfully repeated this
process. The paper bag was becoming nice and fat -
she had a total of $120! She could leave any time now
but she decided to make some careful plans before her
retreat.
• About this time, Windy was having a little trouble
with Shylock Shaeffer, the rnisrly owner of the
Redtrees Hotel.. Windy had been getting his
refreshments on tick and Shylock was pressing him for ,
payment - he even threatened to cut off Windy's
supply unless he produced the money. Windy Perkins
had no idea where he could put his hands on some
ready cash. There was nothing ready for market and
little to sell that would be of value. He had to find
semething. Anything to appease Shylock and continue
his afternoon visits to the hotel. In alcoholic
desperation, his foggy mind settled on the old Chevy.
This he didn't' need,, and surely the Pantown wreckers
would give him a few bucks for it - yes, the old car
would be his salvation. A ten cent call from the 'phone
box and Windy had made the deal. He wouldn't call
from his own 'phone of course, no use letting his wife
Lizzie into his secret. •
It wasa few days before the wreckers.picked up. the'
old car - in the middle of the :afternoon, when Lizzie
was engaged in her domestic work at 'the Vicar's
house. Windy even took time out from his boozing
session to transact the business.
The owner of the Pantown wreckers was a good.
natured, ne'er-do-Well called Bert Trotter, By all
standards, he was a good living man. He didn't smoke
or drink and since the man had to d,o something to
keep him so Cheerful, one could only assume that the
charms of the ladies Occupied much of his leisure
thoughts. He was a one man operation - driver; oxy
acetylene steel cutter, labourer, and everything else
• connected with the business. His yard occtiPied .alot
on the main street of Pantown - the town's eyesore - a
couple of acres strewn With old cars in various stages'
of :metalic decay. The' word environment hadn't been
invented at that time.•
•tTrotter gave Windy's oldtar the once over and
figiomf that his trip to Windy's farm had hardly been
4rt.h..the gas that his wrecking truck had used.

the1ires - it's got to be worth more than that".
•''TwentY bucks that engine will be seized 'solid: No
good even for parts. tt's scrap an' that's all it is.
• Twenty bucks - take it or leave it,"
Windtook it and the old CheVy vvas towed away,
leaving justa brown patch at the. place it had
• occUnied.
.When Lizzie returned frOm. her work that afternoon
• and' saw the . ,ibject of her salvation had disappeared,
her mind bec, ame.a turmoil and she could hardly.wait
for Windy to take his hat off when he. returned from
the hotel. •
"Where' did the old car go?" she asked.
• "Gone to the Pantown wreckers, soit 'as - didn't
need irany'ow.'' •
• Lizzie could no longer contain herself. She broke
down and cried bitterly.
•"Stupid woman, so yer 'are.- looks like yer thought
• more about that old car than yer did about me!
