Students tour Ottawa,
meet Pierre Trudeau
BY SANDI BROOKS & KIM HILVERDA
'As representatives of the L.C.P.S. we
would like to tell the people of Lucknow
and the surrounding areas about the grade
eight' trip to Ottawa,
On Wednesday, June 6th, we travelled
to Old Fort Henry in Kingston. Here we
saw the changing of the sentry and the
firing of, the cannon as well as the fort
itself. From here we travelled to Ottawa
where we stayed at Carleton University.
The food served at the University's
cafeteria was delicious and it ranged from
pancakes, eggs and bacon (for breakfast) to
hamburgers, Frenchfries, potatoes and
meat. (for supper)
On Thursday, June 7th after breakfast
we travelled to a. tour station where. we
picked up our tour guide.. She took us
around Ottawa and pointed out all the
important places such as the Science Farm,
the Parliament Buildings; the Ambassa-
dors' homes and the PrimeMinister's
residence.
The next stop was the National Art
Gallery. Here paintings from ancient to
modern times were on display. We ate
lunch at the Metropolitan Cafeteria and we
rode up and down the escaltors until our
feet nearly fell off.
The Parliament Buildings were our next
stop and:in the House of Commons the
woodwork as well as the stone work was
magnificent! The library was made of Wood
chiseled intofine •patterns; not one was the
same and the roof was made of gold leaf!
Without the help of Bob McKinley, we
wouldn't „have been allowed entrance into
the rooms we saw. For -this we are
thankful. .•
here-we-werit-te,-the. governor-gen-
eral's home .where we were given a
complete tour of the house.
. We then travelled to. the Prime Minist,
er's residence where we met the•former ,
•
Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trlideau11
We returned to Carleton for supper and
then. Visited the Aeronautical Museum.
When we returned there was Disco
Dancing til 11.15 p.m. or swimniing and
other recreation, .
On Friday, June 8th we ate breakfast
•and had a guided tour through the Mint.
We visited the War Museum. We visited
the Museum of Man as well as the
Museum of Natural Science.
• The students then had 3 hours of
shopping time on Sparks Street.
Supper was eaten at the University's
cafeteria and later we went swimming. The
swimming pool was Olympic size and
L-shaped. It had music under the water
and 3 tower -diving boards and in the
changerooms there were a whirlpool, a
sauna and a sunbath.
• At bedtime we were allowed to order
pizzas if we wished. . _
On Saturday, June 9th we rose early to
eat breakfast .and • pack. We left Ottawa
before 9 o'clock and we arrived at Upper
Cahada Village at around 10 o'clock. Here ,
we were greeted with a historical 'sight
(site). We left the village at 'about 12.15
p,m. and, travelled to Oshawa where we
shopped during a half-hour of freedom. We
.stumbled back into the bus and just outside
of Newmarket the bus broke down with a ,
hole in the radiator. While the bus was
under reconstruction the students played
Red. Rover. (if so wished)
We stopped every half-hour or everytime
we met up with a gas station to get water.
for the radiatOr. We arrived home in
Lucknow at 12.15 a.m., a tired but happy,
group of Students.
Th thesewho-helped-make-7--
this trip a reality and a success. A special
thanks to all the chaperones and our bus.
