Defends nuckar moratorium
• from page 7
Yes, the N.D.P. has asked
for a moratorium, and unlike
the Liberals, made its stand
known during the 1877 elec-
tion. That policy has . been
reflected in the actions of the
select committee, and not in
the sensationalist ravings of
Dr. Smith and his 'berals.
The moratoriu ha • been
requested so that a non
partisan public enquiry into
nuclear power can be made.
It does not mean that The
Bruce Nuclear Power Station
would be closed, with trem-
endous cost incurred, this
would be ludicrous, that is
only in the imagination of a
few scare mongers':. that will
either gain from a political
viewpoint or financial.
When at parties with hyd-
ro workers there are com-
ments that .these men have
been exposed to radioactiv-
ity, -'and these same men
treat this as a joke, the fact
lies that genetic damage,
cancer, and burns could
result. The N.D.I. wants to
ensure the workers can work
with • as much safety as
possible, and notcause
health problems in . later life
as has happened with the
asbestos . industry,
Workers have stated that
the safety drills are a. joke as
when on the jab , theytake
short cuts. The N.D.P. recog-
nizes
that the safety stand=
aids set by Ontario Hydro
are .important and must be
carried -out sd that sickness in
,lager life due to negligence is
kept t a•; Minimum. The •
stbrage of thee-ful wastes has
not . been answered to a
satisfactory end. The N.D.P.
wants the answers while we
have time to think and not
rush when we are faced with;
an emergency. • Also the
people have' to be educated
that this storage is the best
and will not come back to
haunt our children as indust-
rial wastes have done in this;
decade. wastes.
John Giese talked about
cheaper power at the source;
This would help both Bruce
County and the farmers,
across whose. land power
lines now have to go. •'
However, one ofthe many,
problems a moratorium
would cause would be thatof
construction workers i Ont;
ario, but this is all'A. with
us. We have wo -ke eavin

for'7lbs in the f Western,
Provinces, the United States,;
-"and the Arab Oil'., States.
What we need provincially is
a . Provincial• Works Con-
struction Policy so that men
that work on . such projects
will, be guaranteed _._a job
when they finish. This guar-
antee could lead to a more
stable construction program
in Ontario and even lower'
costs to the taxpayers. How-
ever, this leads to long term
planning . by our provincial
government and a guarantee
clause of employment to
Ontario workers in govern-
ment contracts. ,
These areas, so briefly
mentioned, are not easy to
solve, but when we have a
breathing space due to a glut
of Hydro in Ontario let us get
the answers and ensure long
term planning for the safety
