However, even this victory was shdrtlived since McKinley received 220 votes in Zurich when the final results were in, Graeme Craig received 207 and Moira Couper, 31 vittes. As results continued to Our in, and CBC reporters predicted a Conservative minor- ity government, one of Craig's supporters counselled the only thing they could do now was to cheer for the NDP party ,out West - "it's the only thing that Can help. us." Although the NDP did win more seats in the West in this election, the Conservative party swept Alberta and Joe Clark won enough ridings to form the government.. Although the Craig supporters knew they'd lost the riding from 9.p.m. on, Mr. Craig and his campaign manager decided to wait until .iresults from, the north of the riding had filtered in before conceding the election: Graeme Craigdid top the polls , in Mildmay, winning 309. votes to McKinley's 198 votes and Couper's 51 votes; but by 10/0 p.m., it was obvious even some of the traditionally Grit territory in southern' Bruce had switched and voted Conserva- tive. Bruce McDonald announced to sup- porters that he and the Craigs were going • • to . McKinley's headquarters in Saltford to concede the election. Mr. Craig looked tired, but managed a wave to his supporters when he left to acknowledge Robert McKinley's victory. As one of Craig's supporters concluded, "You just can't beat the national trend."
