The sale at Howard
Hodge's Garage near the
main intersection of
Ripley last Saturday
attracted a good crowd of -
bidders who came froma
wide area. In charge of
the sale of tools and
equipment were auc-
tioneers Don Rathwell-
and LAssociates of
Seaforth. He and his
associate took turns. Also
they had their own staff
for registering, clerking
and handling the
payments. To the west of
the . Garage the grade 9 -
students had a lunch
booth set up and they,
were assisted by Mrs.
Judy (Gerald) Coiling,
Doug Coultes, and, ~John
La Flair. ` Besides the
students had a bake sale
and car wash to, "gather
funds for .a coming trip.
The general comment; of
those in attendance at the
sale was that .,the auc-
tioneers did a good job.
The parked cars lined the
main streets and space
was hard to find at times.
Radiosondes or
weather balloons sent up
at different places in. the
United States have been
landing in the area during
the past week. These
radiosondes are carried
up to a height of 17 miles
and ' then . the parachute
brings them 4lown for a
landing. Last week the
warm . winds were
blowing from the south:
On Tuesday evening of
last week, May 8, one was
found on the farm of G.
Meurs on the fouth
Concession west in Huron
township when they were
working in the fields. On
Wednesday evening his
wife Mrs. Sylvia Meurs
and daughter Marian
brought .it to the house
here. It must have made
a soft landing' as
everything was ' intact
even to a small light
bulb.On Friday afternoon
a man brought another
one to the housee here, and
Fran told hith what it
was, At the time the
writer does not have his
name.
Up for • the ,day at the
sale last Saturday with
Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Hodge were her sister
and husband Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Fisher, of
Exeter.
'Last Wednesday
through to Friday this
area had really .hot
summer weather with
temperatures from" 86 to
90 on the Fahrenheit
scale. Tractors were out
everywhere as farmers
.were getting the fields
seeded or ready to be
sown. But not a white sea
gullcould be seen
whereas at other times
there are generally large
flocks in the fields being
worked. Morrison
MacKenzie of Inverhuron
'informs us that the rapid
change from cold to
warm weather has killed
schools of these alewife
fish in Lake Huron and
even while -the fish were
being washed still alive
and flapping around the
gulls were grabbing
them. The gulls are so
busy and full of eating
fish along the shore that
they are unable to fly
inland to look for ear-
thworms in the fields.
Mrs. Isla Clampitt
called last week to say
that contributions of
clothing, small household
articles and left over
cotton cloth from sewing
and suitable for quilt
patches may be left at
Mrs. Judy van Kooten's,
shop in the . old Royal
Bank at the mainstreet
corner before June 7.
These will be gratefully
received and offered at
the Figure Skating
Rummage Sale
Among those in
hospital from this area
• are Leonard Irwin of
Ripley, . and Howard
Thompson of the nor-
theast boundary in Huron
township. Both are in
Kincardine hospital and

Last Friday evening
the annual prom dance
was held in the. High
School auditorium. With
the nice warm evening
young couples dressed up
for 'the occasion were
seen walking downto the
school.
John Gamble is

help in making further
renovations to Knox shed
- a historic building and

tire's more to
or selling a car
than you think
When you're buying or selling a car
privately, a handshake and bill of sale
doesn't mean the deal is complete.
If you're the seller, it's -in your
best interest to inake, sure the change
of ownership has been registered -
properly with the Ministry of Trans-
portation an j Communications.
If it hasn't; all parking tickets auto-
matically go to you. If you ignore
them you could be subject to arrest
for failure to pay fines. You could
also find ;yourself involved in a civil
suit if the vehicle is' in an accident
after the sale.
If you're the buyer, it's also in your
best interest to mak sure the change
of ownership has been registered.
Both buyer and seller should visit a
Ministry of Transportation and
Communications licence=issuing office
and transfer the ownership in person.
A free pamphlet, "Buying or Selling
a Car Privately'; is available at all
