A typicalgrandma
The following story about
Isobel (Arthur) Hawkwood,
formerly of Ashfield Town-
ship, appeared in the Rocky
View Times and Airdrie
Echo, Alberta, where she
now makes her home. She is
the mother-in-law of Jack
Ritchie, Lucknow. The story
is' reprinted here for the
interest of our readers.
BY EDITH WOOLLIAMS
A grandmother can be any
age past thirty of conrse, but
for many people the title
belongs to an older woman
with greying hair. She prob-
ably wears a print apron and
she is sure, to have. a lively
greeting and ready smile.
She'll also have a few aches
and pains but these are
adjusted to whatever lifestyle
• she has settled into. Such a
typical grandma is Mrs. Iso-
bel (Arthur) Hawkwood and
by many friends she is called
• just that., Grandma Hawk -
wood. •khe has t nty-two
grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren of her
own as well.
HOOKS RUGS
Mrs. Hawkwood now sits
by the hour when she is well
enough and hooks rugs of all
sizes for her family, She has
won a few prize ribbons at
the Bearspaw Fair for her
rugs. A distinctive work is of
a Holstein cow on a rustic
background which is display-
ed on the hearth of her
daughter Margaret and her
husband Sam Chalack, a
dairyman of the rippling hills
of Glendale, northwest of
Calgary.
,NO WEAVER
Life hasn't always been
serene for Grandma 'Hawk -
wood. Before her marriage
her husband from Lancashire
hated the life of the cotton
mills and the weaving he was
trained to do. He • tried r1
working for Mapletons, a
vegetarian firm, until a
brother-in-law who had come
out to Canada enticed him
here. The men came out in
