government and the premiers were co-op-
erating, harmoniously.
McKinley believes the people of the
country should vote against the prime
minister because he cannot control the
economy, he has allowed unemployment
and he has divided the country.
A ,Clark government says McKinley
would restore trust in the federal govern-
ment. Business will be stimulated because
they will not be afraid to move ahead since
"the government won't change the rules in
the middle of the game as the Liberals have
done."
There will be co-operation across the
country with Joe Clark 'as prime minister.
"Clark is a good organizer," says
McKinley and he will work for the
co-operation of the premiers and Quebec
with the federal government.
THE ECONOMY
• McKinley cites the Conservatives' in-
centives to stimulate the economy as the
party's strategy to deal with a sluggish
economy and high unemployment.
Tax deductions of $2 billion' to n' ' •yin
and low income people through pers...ial
income tax deductions is one policy. A tax
credit for purchase of shares in a Canadian
company and mortgage deductions for
home owners will' help get the economy
moving again says' McKinley. A 20 per cent
deduction: in the building industry will help
to create jobs in construction.
McKinley is disturbed by the Liberal
government's cutbacks of 6 Per cent, to the
agricultural industry which ot41y receives 1
per cent of the federal budget. He hears
stories of the farm credit people having to
put, up ,more farms for sale. The cost of
machinery and, fertilizer has sky -rocketed
and the farmers' income has not kept. pace.
Beef producers says. McKinley are
unable to take advantage of higher prices
for beef at present because they are still
catching up from three, years ago when
Australian and New Zealand beef was
entering the country at ridiculous prices.
"The 'government vacillated for two
years before they placed import controls on
beef to protect the beef farmer Canada,"
he says. Some beef farmers had to quit
beef and some quit farming because of it
he adds. There would be . morebeef
available if those farmers' were still
farming beef today.
McKinley is concerned about the future
of farming in ;Huron -Bruce where it is our
major industry, when the farmer must pay
Si' per pound for a calf and can only sell the
finished ' beef for 86' cents .a pound'.
McKinley wants to see the government
export more food products because the
Canadian farmer is. only viable if he gets
bigger and is capable of producing more
given the support for his product.
Free trade is good says 'McKinley but
you can't think of it, only one way. It's got
to be fair trade and he cites the. example
that higher tariffs are paidon our products,
exported to the U.S. than on U.S. products
imported here.
Canada did not get access' to the
European Common Market at the same
time as England because of the "Liberals'
failure to be on the job," says McKinley.
There is no protectibti'for Canadian exports
since we lost preference with England
when she entered the Market. It is difficult
to get Canadian products into the Common
Market because of their levy system.
HYDRO CORRIDORS
McKinley does not want to see Hydro
corridors running through the prime agri-
cultural land in Huron -Bruce. While it is a
provincial issue, he feels hydro corridors.
should be plated in sparsely populated
areas. He says he has been assured by
Break

A break in at 'Lucknow, Custom •Welding'
and Machine early ..Thursday morning,
May 10 resulted in the theft of machinists'
tools, chain saws and lawn mowers. ". The
thieves ransacked the office of Diane's Pop
Shop which is located in the same building
creating considerable damage.
The break in occurred around 3.30 a.m.
when the vandals gained, entrance through
a back door of . the building.
There is no estimate of damage or cost of
stolen articles available at the present
time.
Council hriefs
A motion was passed by Lucknow Village
Council on Tuesday, May.. 8 to , permit.
Environment Canada in 'conjunction with
the Maitland Valley Conservation Author-
ity, to install a water level and forecasting
station on the north side of Gough Street.
t t t.
Reeve George Joynt recommended the
four municipal councils represented on the
arena board, meet to .discuss the purchase
of a new brine pump which is required for
the Lucknow arena. Thel pipes are rusted
through and the pump will not last another
winter. The cost of replacing the pipes,
pump and ' motor is estimated' to be
$25,000.
Lncknow Senthiel, Wednesday, May 16, 1979—PI
Ontarib Hydro there is little chance of a
nuclear generating station along Lake
Huron in Huron County.
He believes there should be some inde-
pendent body as a watchdog over Ontario
Hydro to._oversee their building programs
and the question of nuclear safety.
RAIL SERVICE
McKinley wants passenger rail service
restored to this area, , $4 million was
promised by. the :Liberals in the last
election to be put into rail passenger
service and nothing has been done.
McKinley says rail passenger service
is the `'economic method of travel for, the
future, and should be promoted.
"The only" thing the Liberals have done
is given CN a new paint job (Via rail),"
a5
quips McKinley.
In Europe rail service has been the
answer to the problem of crowding which
would not permit additional highways to be
built. The longer railways are allowed to
deteriorate says McKinley the greater the
cost to re-establish the service when we
need it in the future. M
People were not satisfied with the
service and were not using it when rail
service was stopped in this area. At the
hearings they spoke out about service and
schedules which were. . not conducive to
increased useage of rail service, he says.
"If they speed up the service and -make it
better for passengers to travel by rail, more
people will use rail," says McKinley.
