WI officers consider Year of the Childai. waterloo conference
"Each generation makes
its own accounting to its
children" (Robert F. Ken-
nedy) was the theme of the
31st Officers Conference of
the Federated Women's In-
stitute of Ontario at the
Waterloo University.
Dr. Richard Barham,
Chairman of the Departnient
of Family Studies College at
Guelph University enlarged
on this theme in his address
to almost 600 delegates from
across the Province. He
stated that "though the
majority of young people in
Canada, to -day have ade-
quate shelter, wartnth and
space still in this Internation-
al Year of the Child we must
examine the general well-
being of the Nations children
and become aware of the
changing role of parents and
the increasing number of one
parent families. We are
challenged to consider what
accounting we can make to
our children".
Mrs. Clarence Diamond,.
the President of the Federat-
ed Women's Institute of
Ontario, in speaking to the
delegates,. who were mostly
Curators of Tweedsmuir His-
tories, stressed the import-
ance of preserving our heri-
tage. In 1950 the Women's
Institute began their re-
search, study and compila-
tion of Community history on
Lady Tweedsmuir's request
and guidance. The past
thirty-two years have been
rewarding and this confer-
ence is to be a means of
informing the women that
they may go home with
knowledge and encourage-
ment to continue this project.
Miss Molly McGhee, the
Director'of Home Economics
Branch, Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food spoke of the
need for women to motivate
the liublic particularly the
young people to be immun-
ized. She is hopeful that
Canadians will develop a
greater appreciation and im-
prove their rights and oppor-
tunities for self-fulfilment.
In 1903 the Ministry prov-
ided one Home Economist
and this year had 40 plus 2
specialists who reached
70,000 through their short
courses. Miss McGhee prais-
ed the Women's Institute for
providing more than 5,000
volunteer leaders.
Appreciation was expres-
sed to the Hon. Wm. G.
Newman, Minister of Agri-
culture and Food who took
time from his busy .schedule
to bring greetings and ex-
press his thanks to the Wom-
en's Institute who .are mak-
ing an investment in the
future through the work with
our most valuable resource....
our young people.
With the preservation of
our history as the purpose of.
the Conference they were
aided by Mr. David Roberts,
