HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1979-05-09, Page 10• Page 10—Lucknow Sentinel, 'Wednesday, May 9, 1979 Lucknow hosts annual Calvinette rally Saturday, ,•April 28, 300 •Calvinettes and counsellors held their annual rally, hosted by Lucknow, at the Lucknow District Community Centre. Calvinettes, a girls club affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church, involves girls from 8 - 16 years in Bible lessons, merit badges, crafts and community service projects. Clubs of the Four Season Council who attended the rally came from Blyth, Clinton, Exeter, Bethel, Ex- eter, C.R.C., Goderich, Kin- cardine, Lucknow, Mt. Bryd- ges, Stratford, Strathroy E4 and Strathroy West- naint. The theme for this year's rally came from Jeremia 29:13, "and you will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart". The morning began with registration and refresh- ments at 9.30 a.m. Lucknow head counsellor, Mrs. Rich- ard (Dixie) Askes, welcomed the group and led in opening devotions, singing and a rousing roll call. The girls greatly enjoyed gospel music provided by "Sunward", a band from the Bethel Men- nonite Church from Elmira. Various contests were held throughout the day. In the morning the three finalist in each division of a 'story and letter writing contest were read. These stories and letters had been mailed in earlier and judged by Mrs. Rynie •Bakelaar of R. R. 2 Teeswater, Mrs. Jane Malda of R. R. 4 Wingham, and Mrs. Laura Lee Cayley of Easter thankoffering The Easter :Thankoffering meeting was held in the Church basement with all the congregation and friends in- vited. Mrs. Gordon Finlay- son welcomed everyone and opened the meeting. Mrs. Neil MacKenzie was in Charge" of the devotion. Jan Gibson read a poem, "Do Something" and Shelley • South. Kinloss Presbyter- ian Church W.M,S. held their. May meeting at the home of Mrs. Frank Mac, Kenzie, with an attendance of 20. Mrs. Lloyd MacDoug- all opened with the call to worship. The scriptpre was read by Mrs. Ira Dickie. The meditation on the same passage, The Faithful and Wise Steward; was prepared and given by Mrs. Allan MacDougall. ' The poem, "Are you busy in your Corner", was read by Mrs. Fraser MacKinnon. The offertory prayer was' by Mrs., Frank MacKenzie. From the study of China, a film was shown, China take Three, presented by Mrs. Wm. Munshy. • Mrs. Allan MacDougall, Mrs. Dave -'die, Mrs. Frank MacKenzie took part • in the Prayer Circle. Court- esies were by Mrs. Allan MacDougall, The closing prayer was by •Mrs. Alvin Schmidt. Re- freshments were served by the directors, Mrs. Frank MacKenzie, Mrs. Allan Mac- Dougall, and Mrs. Dave Eadie. Lucknow WMS Mrs. Warren Wylds gave the closing prayer. A social time followed. Study • Collin:, gave the sctipture reading. Mrs.. MacKenzie gave a reading, "God Plant- ed. a Seed", followed by •a reading by Jan Gibson, "As We Sow". Mrs. Finlayson introduced the guest speaker, Miss Ruth Thompson of. Lucknow, who showed slides of her trip to West Africa visiting and touring Nigeria and t,hen Sierra Leone. Miss Thopip- son capably explained the slides in a hilmerous and informative way. Mrs. Ewan •MacLean thanked Miss Thompson for coming. Mrs. Gordon Finlayson gave the offertory prayer. District president attends WI meeting Mrs. Graham- McNee was a guest at the St. Helens W.I. when their May meet- ing was held with fifteen members, gathered at the St. Helens Hall. . There was a good response to the roll call, "An old time weather superstition", Mrs. McNee, District President, brought greetings from the District of West Huron and gave the topic. She read a paper prepared by Mrs. Lorne Ivers who is well over 80 on the well thought out topic "Trend of the Times". Mrs. Cooper left much food • for thought with the motto, "No one is rich enough to live without a neighbour". Readings were given—by Celia Aitchison and Barb Tyler. A 'sing sting. was enjoyed with Mrs. Bruce Raynard as pianist. Currentevents were' ably given by Mrs. Gordon McPherson. Mrs. Edith COoper and Mrs, Barb Tyler served a delicious lunch of fruit bread and cheese. Twenty-four .1Iadtes an- swered the roll call with their favourite Bible verse at the. W.M.S'. meeting held in the church on May 2. Mrs. ()Mar Brooks presided and opened with a poem, "The Right Hand of God". • • The Bible Study was given by Mrs. Jim Aitchison. Mrs. • Wm. Ross gave the Glad Tidings report reading artic- les from missionaries in Nigeria and India. The Mission Study on China, telling the relation- ship between community and individual needs, was ably presented by Mrs. Virdin Mowbray. She told how each individual finds fulfillment doing his assigned work in the community. • The president, Mrs. Mor- gan Henderson closed the meeting with prayer. Lucknow. Winners were Busy Bee stories, lst, Anita Wilts, Blyth; Junior Stories, 1st, Yvonne' Raidt, Clinton;., 2nd Laura Linker, Strathroy Westmount; 3rd, Annita Damsma, Lucknow; Senior Letters, 1st, Cathy de Boer, •Goderich; 2nd, Sylvia Veen- stra, Clinton; 3rd, Debbie Penninga," Exeter, C.R.C.; Advanced Letters, lk, Bon- nie Askes, Lucknow; 2nd, Kathy Smit, Westmount; 3rd, Debbie VanBrink, Mt. Brydges. An attractive display on . the theme was provided by each club, featuring various handicrafts, posters and col- lages all portraying how man can seen God in nattire, in His Word, and in others. Winners for the display were Stratford, •Mr. Brydges and Strathroy East. The afternoon's activities were filled with anticipation and excitement in the form of a derby. Girls from each, club • competed in various skills learned in Calvinettes. Girls busy in crocheting, knitting, braiding, Bible knowledge, physical fitness, , table set- ting, bird identification and many other skills produced plenty of cheers from onlook- ers from each club.
