Ripley youth
Most improved player in. J A hoekey
The following article
appeared in a recent
edition of -the Windsor
Star daily newspaper: It
was • entitled "Award
Night for Spitfires". The
Spitfires were the Win-
dsor Junior A hockey
entry in the O.H.A. and
Brent Armstrong is -the
son of Aurel and Marjorie
Armstrong of Ripley,
Dale and Wayne are
brothers.
"Brent Armstl ong was`
chosen themost im-
proved player and won
the C.K.W.W. trophy.
Armstrong was obtained
in. a. $1,000 waiver from'
the Niagara Falls Flyers,
five games into the seson.
And it was the biggest
waiver steal in recent
league history. The 19 -
year -old left winger from
the Ripley -Kincardine
area finished with 41
goals .and 89 points. He.
finished in the top 30 in
points and in the top 11 in
goals. He added seven
goals and 11 points in .the
playoffs for a total of 48
goals and 100 points in 80..
games.
Incidentally,. Brent is
now -recovering froma
bad cut in his forehead
which required several
stitches. -
A hockey banquet for
the Ripley players and
their families . was held.

the Ripley Huron Com-
munity Complex:. Mrs.
Ann. Collins sends. along

the end of a tour con-
ducted by the writer and
the Owen Sound Forester
Mr. E. F. Johnston, Mr.
Johnston known to all the
club members as
"PUD", a name whic. h he
preferred; cut .the let-
tering into the bark with a
special knife. Those were
the years of the great 4-H
Forestry Clubs at the
Ripley District High
School which numbered
20 to 25 in number and
twice they were second in
the Ontario competitions
at Guelph. Shortly after
this Pud became the
Timber Auctioneer for all
Ontario and just a few
years ago Pud auctioned
a black walnut tree at
Galt for $5750. .Perhaps
when this beech is cut up
a slab with the inscription
could be kept.
Both Reg Moore and
Ossie Forrester are still
receiving care in Victoria
Hospital, London and in
Kincardine District
Hospital respectively.
Wilfrid and Dorothy
Steele. of Huron Township
returned home recently
from a three week,
holiday spent in
California. They visited
with Wilfrid's .sister
Minnie Ackerman and
family at Hayward and
while there they toured
many interesting places
Yoseriiite, Los Angeles,
Disneyland, -Lake Tahoe,
Reno, Carmel and
travelled among the
beautiful Redwoods north

On a recent visit a
couple of weeks ago to the
big Ashfield bush lot back
tye MacCrae or Kenny
MacKenzie sideroad,
_ Mrs. Dorothy Finlayson
of Lochalsh -and. her son
\Alan Finlayson
discovered a big beech
tree fallen quite close to
the McCrae cottage in the
bush. This tree had been
.uprooted in that big wind
storm ' in the early
morning hours on Fri.,
Apr. 6. The same storm
that did thousands of
dollars damage
throughout the area. On
examining the trunk of
the beech they found the
following inscription cut
i ito Its bark "Ripley
•
of Ripley was a dinner
guest on the weekend.
Summary Day for the
needlepoint course was
held Tuesday at the
Complex. Mrs. Grace
Peet and Mrs. Helen
Vander Glas were the
capable leaders for
Ripley Women's
Institute. About 200 ladies
attended to the classes.
Beautiful work was on
display.
Mr. and Mrs. A. J.
Gardner, Aaron and
Brandon of Vanastra
visited with Donnie and
Carol Fludder, Tammy
and Jason on the
weekend. They also
called on Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Johnson.
Gertie Kidney is home
from Kincardine
hospital.
