The men, mechanical maintainer, were exposed to radiation levels that experts say exceed the safe yearly maximum, whiie removing the thread protector sleeve which was over the closure plug thread area of a damaged fuel bundle at Unit one, One man received five point five rems of radiation while the other man received eight rems. According. to the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) the maximum yearly limit of radiation exposure is five rems. Mr. Reaume said he had heard the men were in the exposed area for 10 minutes. Ontario Hydro says •the men's exposures were well below the levels at which any effect would be detected. A detailed investigation, which should be concluded Thursday, is still being carried out, as required by the AECB. The cause of the exposure was a piece of fuel bundle which became lodged under the protector sleeve. The men returned totheir regular jobs at one of the heavy water plants Monday. There is no exposure to radiation there. Mr. Reaume said Ontario Hydro health physicists will continue to keep an eye on both men. The men will not be able fo work in a radiation area for the next year. According to a book published by the Canadian Nuclear Association a person receives .020 rems of radiation when he has a full mouth dental X- ray; '.040 rems for a chest X-ray; .1 rems for an abdominal X-ray; .3 rems •for a stomach and upper GI tract X- ray and .6 rems for a lower G.I. tract X-ray. According to the book, people living in Kerala, India receive five rems of radiation per year due to the high percentage of radioactive thorium in the soil.
