Blizzard roars into Ripley
Last Friday morning
all Western Ontario was
closed down with the
worst storm of the 1979
winter. Outside there was
a roaring blizzard and
everyone was glad to
have shelter. Winds at 60
miles per hour whipped
the heavy fall of
snowflakes into a com-
plete "white out" at
times making zero
visibility. All cars and
trucks were off the roads
and no one was walking
the main street or any
other street for that
matter. Fortunately for
the folks in Ripley itself
the hydro lines stayed up
and power was on.
Schools were closed in
Western Ontario. In
Ripley it was impossible
for foreman Donnie
Peterbaugh to make his
regular weekly garbage
pick-up and nobody even
tried putting the bags by
the curb for they sure
would have been gone in a
hurry. Meetings were
postponed or cancelled.
Later in the afternoon the
snow stopped falling and
winds decreased allowing
some cars and trucks to
•'make it to such places as
the Ripley chopping mill
and to the upstreet
section of the village.
After that storm was
over, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Hilborn of Ripley took off
on Saturday for Florida.
They are spendinig a
three week vacation at
Daytona Beach. Just a
couple of weeks ago their
neighbours Elwyn •and
Mary Pollock returned
home from a monthin
Florida,
Here it is Sunday and it
has snowed most of the
afternoon - Winter has
returned. That much
talked7about March lion
• was just a week late.- that
is the cause of this upset
in Spring.
Norman Stansell of
Smoky Hollow, Con-
cession Two, west in
• Huron township was
fortunate in calling his
big sale of. farm
• „machinery on Thursday -
•
• the day before the bliz-
zard. Auctioneers • in
charge were neighbour
Grant McDonald and
Wallace Ballagh of
• Teeswater.. Por many
people in the area the
• farm will be located
better by saying that it is
the former Ilon
• MacTavish farm.
The folks of Huron
township and Ripley were
sorry to learn of the
passing of Mrs. Walter
Pollock of Lucknow. The
former Blanche Hooey of
the 4th Concession in
Huron township, she and
her husband lived on the
12th Concession west in
Huron prior to their
retiring to Lucknow a
couple of years ago. The
funeral was held on
Sunday afternoon at' the
MacKenzie -McCreath
Home in Ripley with
funeral directors Bill
McCreath of Ripley and
Gary Carruthers of
Lucknow in charge. Rev.
Bob Putman of Pine
River and Rev. Doug
Kaufrnan of Lucknow
United Church took the
services at the funeral
home and •at the Kin-
cardine chapel. Spring
burial will be in the
Kincardine cemetery.
•She passed away last
Friday in Victoria
Hospital, London where
she had been a patient for
two weeks following a
stroke. She was born on
August 9, 1906- in Huron
township. The family
farm is one block west of
the 15th. Surviving are
her husband Walter, her
three sisters Evelyn

Smeltzer) of 2nd Con-
atssion, Huron township,

Elmer of Lucknow and a
•number of nieces and
nephews. Sympathy
extended to all the
family. She was
predeceased. by her
parents Mr. and. Mrs.
William Hooey and two
brothers Stewart and
Lorne.
Last Friday morning
about two o'clock with the
• winds howling in •the
night and, snow flying
round, the fire' whistle
sounded in Ripley. The
firemen responded
despite the adverse
weather taking th fire,
engine and the pumper
truck to the foot of' the
second Concession in the
Point Clark area. Here a
tree had toppled on the
Hydro lines causing
shorts and sparks flying.
Fortunately the
Walkerton Hydro truck
was in the Tiverton area
and it \was contacted.
Ripley firemen stayed for
the half hour or so, to
await their arrival and
get the situation under
control.
