BY
CHRISTENA
ROBERTSON
• The Happy Hearts Club
of Ripley met on Mar. 9
for a real St, Patrick's
'Party. Irish symbals and
shamrocks decorated the
Legion Hall.
Reg Godfrey acted as
president in the absence
of Mrs. Arnold. Stewart
Shiello put everyone in '
the Irish mood with ,his
tape' recorder of Irish.
music and Mrs. W. J.
MacKay welcomed all at
the door as hostess of the
day.

song with Mrs. R.
MacKenzie as pianist for
all music of the day.

Low income previously
underlies high beef :.rices
Canada has been a net
importer of beef since 1969.
We might have been in a
position of being able to
export larger quantities of
Consumers and the federal
government are currently
pre -occupied by the high cost
of beef. In 1.978 the retail
price for beef rose by 46 per
cent.
Part of the answer lies in
the weakness. of the Canad-
ian dollar which is reflected
in .. high domestic market
prices because of the high
cost of imported beef and the
current level of U.S-. price. •._
The real truth of the
matter is that the largest
contributing factor. to current
high beef prices are the low
prices experienced by ; prod-
ucers in 1975, 1976 and 1977.
None of the current concern
would be' necessary if an
orderly marketing system for.,
beef . with ..a pricing mech- •
. anism had been in place
when it was most -needed.
If the.government ' had
acted decisively to save the
cattle herds in 1975 .and
1976, massive liquidation 'of
herds would have been
avoided.

Foreign control
of economy
impractical,
N.F.U. Vice President Bill
Dascavich says that control
of Canada's economy by for-
eign multi -national corpora-
tions makes it impractical for
any Canadian government to
effectively control unemploy-
ment or inflation. .
Mr. Dascavish described
the recent sale of Panco
Poultry by the B.C. govern-
ment to Cargill Grain Co. of
Minnesota as a "further ex-
ample of foreign takeover of
Canada's agriculture ,proces-
sing . •industry".
The N.F.U. Vice President
charged that in addition to
practically all of Canada's
automobile,aircraft, rubber,
petroleum, electrical appara-
tus and tobacco industries
now being foreign owned,
the agricultural .processing,
forest products, retail and
wholesale industries are now
also being bought up by
non Canadians.
Dascavish. Called for firm-
er public control and effect-
ive economic managementin

ex• yuackgrass grower.
The best time to apply Roundups herbicide by Monsanto will
vary, depending on where you live, and where quackgrass
reaches the recommended stage of growth.
But now is the best time to see your farm chemicals dealer.
Before quackgrass robs your crop of moisture and valuable
nutrients. This spring, let Roundup herbicide make you an
ex-quackgrass grower, too.
