Executive Director Notman Hayes warned.
However he promised to run the hospital
as efficiently as possible and. keep the hoard
posted on the deficit, as it develops. The new.
budget goes into effect April 1 at which time
the hospital was to have closed 14 active
treatment beds and cut back on staff. •
Mr, Hayes also pointed out to the
members that, the. board is legally res

t -bed closures
ponsible for the hospital -- including any
deficit that develops, No one appeared
intimidated by the prospect and Dr, Wilkins,
after ,joking that he was ,lust shaking in his
shoes and that they could put the board all in
the same cell, observed: "If any government
locks up this board, God help theml"
The board action appears to have been
sparked by the overwhelming show of public

meeting held the previous night. Nearly 300
people from the town and surrounding
communities crowded into the auditorium at
the Wingham Public School where a panel
Composed of Mr. Hayes, Dr. Wilkins, former
hospital administrator Mrs. 1. E.. Morrie,
hospital auxiliary president Mary Vair and
Sandi Deslauriers, speaking for Dr. Doug
Mowbray, outlined the situation •at the
hospital and fielded questions.
Sentiment at the - meeting was over-
whelmingly in favour of opposing any
attempt to cut back facilities at the hospital
and board members who attended this
meeting carried the message back to the
board.
At the public meeting citizens were urged
to writepersonal letters to the health
minister supporting the hospital and oppos-
ingthe bed cuts and about 120 people stayed
after the meeting to do so.• People were also
invited to contribute toward the' expenses of
the anti -cutbacks campaign and by the end
of the night . well over $.100 had been
deposited in a container placed at the gear of

Point out the money saved by Wingham

Wingham Hospital, 'which operates under

lower, their 78 occupancy rate is higher than
the provincial average and the active length
of stay, 7.3 days is •lower than the provincial

populations applicable to Wingham? Wing-
ham is a unique area - 13.8 per cent of the
population are seniors. We experience
Severe winter storms. It is the only hospital..,
within a.25..mile radius.
Wingham hasbeen efficient in cutting
costs but they have not been commended -
there has beenno allowance for private
funding.
Closures will lead to loss of services in the
future including specialists, consultants,
cancer clinic, and the nursing school.
Less beds has a snowball effect. Less beds
will mean lessreferrals. which will mean less
beds in .the, future.
Stress the cost in ternis of time, dollars and
emotional tension to people forced to travel.
to the larger centres for care.

BY AUBREY HIGGINS
My friends,,
When I received my,. Sentinel today, I
did my regular routine. I looked the front
page osier -and saw there • were . articles
that I wanted to read, and then I flipped
the paper over to the column, onzthe back
page.
Today in reading under the heading, ':`1
'see by the• Sentinel", what I read was •
more like a catastrophe. 1 felt that it
would mean' the same to most of the
residents and even moreto a great many
of the staff here at Pinecrest.
I have written a number of articles on •
Pinecrest Manor..
• Now, I intend to make it more clear
•why I have been : able to write those
articles', and prove to my readers, why 1
think we have an establishment second to
none in Canada,
MRS. CAMERON ,
I will take Mrs. Cameron first. Sheis a
registered nurse. In her role, as head of
•the nursing.. staff, she took each individu-
al, who came under: her care and studied
'their individual personalties.
I am very sincereabout this. She knew
each resident as a separate person, not
Just asone of the 61 people who occupy
the beds under this one roof.
It takes a person with one awful 1ot..of
understanding to do this. Some one who
can use her training as a nurse, and also
has strength to use discipline where
needed. But at the same . time she cap
giveout: sympathy' and help in .the same
manner. ..
To me she was a woman, whose little
white cap with the black band bellonged
Yon top of her: head.
While she was here, I cannot" remem-
ber a single incident of trouble .or
confusement.
Mrs. Cameron, on behalf of the
residents and personnel, no matter how.
good the replacements, we are going to
miss you.
• MRS. MOFFAT
Now for Mrs. Moffat. Well,1 will have
to admit that she and I did not see eye to
eye for some time after I came here as a
resident.
One day, I made a request of her, one
that she had never experienced. and she
Nowto let the world know the real type
of nurse she Vis, she made several long''
distance calls that day. to try and find out f
if my request was legitimate or not,
Eventually, .she contacted a person,
who knew me . personally, and they •
approved my request, and Mrs. Moffat
irznediately fulfilled. it.
Now, if. 1 were confined and needed a
personal nurse, she among all the others,
is. the lady I wpuld want .to have in
attendance: •
I believe, that she, in her own way, has
acquired a feeling of deep interest in: each'
individual under her, care.
Yes, I believe should ` Mrs. Moffat
choose to continue hercareer, she would
become one of the greatest nurses of all
time.
4111 •
Anyone, . who would do for -me, what
she did that day, is without any doubt a
true nurse, • as .,the word is , used with
meaning.
Thanks; Mrs. Moffat, from all of us.
IVER.:MILLER
Now, • "you. -old so. and so", I have
expressed by feelings about losing :you,
not as a friend," I hope, but in regard to
the feeling of security in having you
around from day to day.
-• 4nu gave us a feeling of security, your
• being here, when the building was built.
You know where each valve, each switch,
each wire' leads to, the capacity of. each,
and every unit in the building.
You are out with the snow blower at 4
a.m;, and•, then stay the whole day
through.
Yes, we felt protected; not only that we
could,,, depend on you to fulfill any
complaints from a burnt out light bulb, to
taking us to the dentist or . down town.
But, abOve all, there was never a
personal favour 'to any of the inhabitants
of Pinecrest that you did not cheerfully
fulfill.. •
Yes,, we are going to miss that gruff
base voice with the smile in it, and that
little story, once in a while.
Thanks Eldon,which is not truly
expressing our appreciation of you.
Let's hope the future will be as bright as
the past.
