Both Courtney arid , Susan are lab technicians in St. Joe's Hospital. This past weekend Mrs. Violet MacKenzie, Mrs. Elizabeth Fair, Mrs. Mary R. MacDonald, and Miss Christina Robertson returned home from a vacation in Florida. Mrs. Marilyn (Bob) Johnston andNaughters Julie and Jenrifer and Mrs. Verna Finlayson of Ripley and Mrs. Violet Cameron of Pine River spent the weekend with Oral and. Murray Cameron in Weston. Mr. and Mrs. Don MacTavish returned home to Ripley from a holiday in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Godfrey and Mr. and Mrs. Art Smeltzer visited last Saturday with their aunt Mrs. Lamont who had a birthday party at Brucelea Haven in Walkerton. " On Friday evening through Saturday morning, Feb. 16 and 17 this area .had its coldest spell of weather in some years. In places the frost reached depths of four and a half feet into the ground even with the snow covered. So frozen water pipes resulted in • many places. And at the time of writing (Monday of this week) it is still cold and raw. Last Wednesday was an activity day in this area. Early in the morning the, delegates from the Ripley Agricultural Society gathered at the Ripley post office to, board the bus for the, Ontario convention in the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. In theafternoon • Bruce County Home Economist Miss Barbara •de Vissclier of Walkerton held a course on Nutrition in Ripley. Also in the afternoon a seminar on cattle diseases was held at the farm of Jim Needham on the 10th concession of Huron • Township, The Ripley Minor Hockey News this past week was reported by Mrs. Elaine Pollock and the write-up of the Ripley IntermediateHockey was done by Mrs. Gwen (Howard) Harrison - both ladies of the 10th con- cession in Huron town- ship. Horticultural -Society BY ADELINE HACKETT Ripley - and District Horticulture Society held their meeting in the Legion Hall on Tues., Feb. 20 with.28 members present. Mrs. Lloyd Wor- thington was the hostess. In the new business Joan McLeod will replace Rita Irwin as auditor. In keeping with St. Valentine's Day a sing song was held with Marion Gamble as pianist and Rita Irwin leading the singing. Marion also favOured with two piano in- strumentals. Adeline Hackett told of the legends behind some of the plants we receive at Christmas, and also spoke briefly on an Installation service held at a Garden Club in Lake Placid Florida. The woman installing • the new • officers in the Garden Club,(which closely resembles our Horticultural Society) compared the progress of the club to the care and culture of an African Violet. The time and work _put into the care of a violet determines the success of the plant. So it is in our society, the final results are based on what we have put into -it during the year. She presented each new officer with a violet and chose the colours most closely related to their office. Mrs. Walter Farrell gave the courtesies, after which lunch was served by the committee Erma McDonald, Clara Shiells and Dorothy Brook‘: Intermediate hockey BY GWEN HARRISON Fans have been treated to some exciting hockey in the W.O.A.A. •Inter- mediate "D" semi-finals with first place Drayton and fourth place Ripley tangling in a 4 out of 7 series. On Wed., Feb. 21, Ripley met Drayton in the third game with the series tied with one win each. Ripley went one game ahead with a 6-4 win. Drayton scorers: Leo Glazema - I goal, I assist; Ken Oampbell, Buzz Beier, Reg. Cathplin - 1 goal each; Ab Messcrink -I assist. • Ripley: Mike Pollock 4 goals, Larry Farrell and Mike Gallant - 1 goal, 1 assist each; Barry MacDonald -• 4 assists; Dave Dunlop and Robert, Regier - each 1 assist. Drayton served 18 minutes in penalties and Ripley had 10 minutes. Friday, Feb, 23, saw Drayton back in Ripley for • the fourth game.
