Andy Burgess is the liason officer far
Lucknow in a program, initiated by the
Kincardine detachment of the Ontario
Provincial Police, to put the policeman 1
back on the 'street.
: He is given time to come down to the
village to• make contact with the people
and he thinks the program is providing •
a better service.. •
There was a time when villages like
Lucknow were. policed by a town police-
man, but he could not give the round
the clock service provided by the OPP.,
Contacts became too informal and :
created problems says Andy.
• Being liasoil Officer for the village, .
Andy takes a special interest in affairs
concerning the village. He made sure
the school and the police were following .

Policemen are not: moved around as

There was 'once the concern that an

, There is a chance that Andy would be
given the opportunity to qualify for a
promotiOn by moving, but he feels it,
would be too costly, for him because of,
what he would have to give up to move.
He purchased 30 acres of land in
J-litron Township six years ago because
he had always wanted to 'own , land. "I
wanted to hold onto something for a
, he says•
The property has a river ravine
running through it and because of the
haWthorne bushes along the ravine,
Andy named it "Hawthorne Heights' ' .
Shortly after he had -purchased .the
property, several friends put up a sign
and the next time Andy drove by to look
out on his land,. there was a sign that
read, :"Hawthorne bushes for sale".
Andy has planted softwood trees and
some day the ravine Will be grown in.
He plans to plant a hardwood bush
alo g the back of the property this year:.
Fie designed a house which he • had
built overlooking theravine. He worked .
• along 'With Abe contractor on his • days
off. The home features •a full length
balcony off the living room and the
mister bedroom: looking out over the
ravine. ,
The house was not completed when
they had to vacate their home in
Kinaardine, so Andy and his wife, Barb,
and their two daughters, Jennie and
Lori, lived in the garage on the property
while the house Was completed. They
finally moved into the house in October,
1975, after experience with bathing gird
washing clothes in the lake.
Andy keeps a garden where he grows
.potatoes and raspberry bushes and he
has a fable garden for vegetables near
the house. He has a tractor and works
some of the land has
hopes someday to
have a nursery.
This Christmas the family had their
first Christmas tree from the pines they
'planted on the property.
Andy and Bark travelled throUghout
Canada during the years before thegirlt
were born. Barb worked three days a
week and if Andy had a long weekend,
Barb would be done at three o'clock on
Thursday arid they'd ditappear down
the road.

The trip to England was Only enough
"to touch the fringes" and it leaves you
with your suit, case packed ready to go
again, says Andy. '
Many times be and Barb have
'rattled ' their chains" and talked of
'taking off for a year in Europe. Barb
would tutor the girla while they were out
of school for a year. But if's ' know

the shower is right there w en you/want

dreams about their garage experience.
The girlS are school age 'now and with
their camper. trailer the family can be
• fairly mobile, so a trip to Disney World
is planned. • • ' :
After their nomadic period during the
first five year of their marriage, Andy
and Barb decided it was time for a
family. Andy remembers when, the girls ..,
were pre-schoolers, he used to take
them to a mothers' 0 -operative nursery
school two mornings a week. The
mothers took turns helping out at the
nursery school and beemiseBarb work-
ed, Andy took the girls when he was
off shift. "It was a change of pace", for
some of the mothers to see a -father
helping out, thut they soon ,became
'comfortable With the ic!ea.
Besides his ' family and his farm,
sports are an interest. -Andy play's

OPP volleyball team that used to
