Letters to the editor
R. 1, Lucknow, Ont.,
February 9, 1979.
To the' Editor, -
I just thought I would write
a few lines telling you how
much we always look forward.
to receiving the Sentinel with
the local news. The more we
get acquainted with the.
friendly people we meet in
the tpwn the more interest-

ing it 'gets.
I know- there are probably
quite a few people who
consider we, . Amish, to be
"odd balls", because of the
way we live. But, it certainly
would be greatly appreciated,
• if there could be a decent
hitch rack erected with en-
ough room to tie up our hiirs-
es, that is not blocked by
- snow or cars. We can't very
well drive our horse10a cer-
tain place and then tell him,
"Now, you stay there til we
get back," and expect him to
be there.
Parking lots are needed for
the motorists and they are
provided.
If the town does not see fit
to erect a' hitch rack, we,
'odd balls", will just have to
do the best we can, or go
somewhere else.

The year of the..child
The Canadian Commission for
International Year of the Child
believes the rights of children
are best realized in the context
of the family and the commun-
ity. Many dimensions of the
child's world can also be exam-
ined'separately so that we can
understand them from the
child's point of view.
To this end, monthly themes
have been devised to help focus'
attention all year long.
These are: January, The Child
as Person; February, The Child
as Citizen; March, The Child as
Creator; April, The Child, Nat-
Environment; May,
andThe Health
Well-being of
the Child and Family; June, The
Exceptional Child; July, The
Child's Right to Belong; August,
The Child at Play; September,
The Child as Learner and
Worker; October, The Child as
*" Neighbour; November, The
- Child, Books and the Media, and
December, The Child, The Fam-
ily, The Community, The World.
J._
The following are some sug-
gestjons from the Ontario Gov-
ernment on how individuals or
groups can help make this a
memorable and- meaningful
year. .
-Become a Block Parent
-Invite a guest speaker to your
club or organization to talk about
positive parenting, education,
day care, handicapped children,
children with special needs or
any area pertaining to children
that would be of benefitito your
members. ,
-Contact your Local Children's
Aid or other voluntary organiza-
tion regarding volunteer work.
-Contact your local Children's
Aid with regard to becoming a
foster parent. ,
-Make a personal committment
to your own children, grand-
children, nephews, nieces, to set
aside extra tine in 1979 for an
educational or_irecreational ex-
perience, e.g. a trip to a zoo,
- museum, conservation area or
art gallery, camping or sporting
event.
-Construct a 'special children's
recreation area in a local park or
school yard.
-Develop a children's theatre
group.
•
-Hold an art, music or drama
festival for and by children.
-Set up a system of volunteers to
help teachersin the classrooms
or on field, trips.
-Plan sports or games events.
-Develop a family project which
involves your children's creative
talents, e.g. build a playhouse,
set up a greenhouse, make your
own greeting cards, start an
aquarium, learn to sail, carnp",
explore nature, start a vegetable
or flower garden.
-Offer to babysit for a single
parent farnily.
-Is there a latch -key child on
your block? Arrange lunch or
after school supervision for
children of working parents.
-Drop in on a new mother to see
if she needs any assistance or
even just some reassuring talk.
-Hire young people for home
maintenance jobs.
-Start a young people's program
at your place of worship.
-Prepare a booklet listing the
community resources available
to assist children and their
iamilies,.e.g. Block - Parents,
Parents' Anonyrnous, aid to new
mothers, parent education cour-
ses, single parent groups, Child-
ren's Aid Societies, pre -post
natal' courses.
-Set up family social events that
include children of all ages - pot
luck dinner, movie night, com-
munity fair, games, nights,
sports day, hobby fair.
This special year to honour
our special youth should be one
otactivity, thought and learning.
It should be one of sharing and
understanding; of realizing the
need for the basic rights outlined
in. the United Nations declara-
tion.
That a Special year has been
designated means only that
children will be in the spotlight
for the next 12 months.
But children and their rights
must be guarded zealously every
year, around the world, if we are
to be guaranteed a future worth
living.
You dotit need to have a child
to appreciate a child. It's -the
International' Year of the Child,
do what you can to help
celebrate it.
...because every
child has the
right
to
smile
