[AT MILLARTON] f.
ydro off • eight hours
Hydro power was off in the village for close to eight hours
Saturday, when a breakdown occurred in the Lucknow
substation.
A lightning arrestor failed at the transformer station late in
the afternoon, around 3.4S p.m. Saturday.
B, J. Pierce of Ontario Hydro, Walkerton said the problem
] was 'internal and work crews did not detect the fault until
early evening.
] Equipment , problems occurred simultaneously at the
-Lucknow substation and in an electronic recloser at Holyrood.
The combination problems at both locations were com-
pounded by severe snow conditions. A snowblower was
required to remove the snow at the Kinloss station to allow
work Brews to reach the equipment.
Specialists with test equipment had to be called in to find
the internal problem as damage was not visible said Pierce.
Hydro moved a complete mobile substation to Lucknow,
but power was restored before it was hooked into the system.
Hydro managed to pickup about 2/3 of the village before the
problems were cleared at the substation and also managed to
restore power tomany of the rural customers in Ashfield,
Kinloss and West Wawanosh from substations at Holyrood;
Wingham and Reid's Corners.
Part of the village had power restored around 9 p.m. and
the Lucknow substation went back into service at 12.40 a.m.
Pierce said that it may seem strange for a lightning arrestor
to cause problems in the winter, but they sometimes
deteriorate when they get a shot of lightning instead of
blowing apart and then fail later. He said that the arrestors
have been removed from the Lucknow substation and will be
replaced with new ones.

Canada's solar eclipse on February 26
could cause permanent eye damage, if you
look directly at it. Improper direct viewing
may cause painless burns to the retina
because the sun's rays can burn a blind spot
in the center of the eye's retina. Damage '
may not show for several hours.
The Ontario Association of Optometrists
says it is safest to avoid any devices for
direct viewing. Watch the eclipse indirectly
on television, for example. Although certain
devices have been safely used for direct
viewing, the risks involved with improper
•
use `.could lead to blindness.
If your children are going to be outside
February 26, the Ontario Association of
Optometrists ask you make sure they do not
look directly at ...the eclipse.. The sun's rays
will become fewer, but not weaker. Keep
small children indoors and suggest older
'ones watch the eclipse indirectly.
Help the older children make a sunscope
withinstruction available from your family
optometrist,' but supervise the safe use of
this indirect viewing method. Better still,
suggest they watch theeclipse on television.

When the hydro went off
on Saturday we were thank-
ful that we had fire places,
woodstoves,combination
furnaces and generators.
Sure didn't take long or a
house to .get cold. Seems we
take so much for granted
until at a time like this when'
we are without heat, water or
lights.
