MONUMENTS BY• JOANNE BUCHANAN Marie Park, a resident of Dungannon for more than 20 years, is the new Dung_annon correspon- dent for the Goderich Signal -Star and the Lucknow, Sentinel. She is replacing former correspondent Mary Dere. Having a special. • column in the newspaper • for Dungannon news is • important, says Mrs. Park, not so much for the people who live in the community but for those who have moved .away and. still subscribe to an area paper to keep abreast of local topics. • Even though Dungannon is a'small community consisting of only •about 300 people, Mrs. Park feels it is important to keep it on the map. • FOr these -reasons, Mrs. Park took it upon herself to write the weekly Dungannon . Doings placed third in an all - Ontario high -low bowling competition in Sudbury after winning 12 house tournaments in the area. But bowling is just one of many pastimes for Mrs. Park. She also likes to sew, knit and cook and is presently hooking her first rug. She is a directo,r on the Dungannon Fall Fair Board. She used to gnter her sewing and baking at the fair- each year and has many prizes to show for these entries. Mrs. Park likes to attend the area card parties and in the sum- -mer, she is interested in following baseball. 'She used to 'play for the.. Dungannon women's baseball team about ten or 12, years ago. • She is prouof the fact that last year, while her daughter was captain, the Dungannon girls' baseball team won the Ashfield Recreation chainpionship. Mrs. Park desctib'es, herself as "an awful Column for the two nearby papers when Mrs.' Bere could no • longer continue. : • Becafise,Ahe is active . • and "gets out and around qdite a bit"; she is able to pick up a lot of news tips for the column which she might not have' heard • otherwise. • Mrs." Park 7.says. she enjoys meeting the public and likes . :writing the colUmn. She is the mother. of • eight children. Four �f them are still at hotne: and the youngest one is five years old. Cope °flier • 'daughters,: Wanda,: was Goderich's New Years baby in 1957. . • , Mrs. Park says she is . glad she Is raising her children in the country althqugh sometimes she thinks : living in . town would be easier because • the . children wouldn't • need rides everywhere they wanted to go. • Although the country kids don't often 'gef• the same :advantages as:the' town kids who are closer to activities,she feels that • country • kids are often "a better •breed" kids. They have clubalike 4-H to pull them close. together, In' town, she • • says, even though the kids are closer to ac- tivities, •many'. of them just walk around the Square with nothing to ,do. She feels the • town • should have a sorts complex br something. similar, •• • Mrs. Park herself was born on a farm in Colborne Township but moved to Goderich when • 'r she was .seven yearaold. She attended GD CI I • • • and after her marriage, ' moved to Dungannon With her husband who was born and raised there. • She still does all her shopping in Goderich but Lucknow is the familY's main centre for Activity. She subscribes to many newspapers and magazines and says she has boxes, and boxes full of books, too many for shelves' to hold. She has read all of these books, being a very fast reader. She is presently reading The Dionne Years by Pierre Burton. Mk's, Park likes art, • painting and gardening. She especially likes roses and intends to plant • several rose bushes in her garden this summer. She • tried to ' start a hor- ticultural ' society in Dungannon once but it • has never gotten off the ground. She wishes people in Dungannon. would • "pull -to'gether" a bit more to form clubs, etc like some close-knit communities do. Mrs. Park belongs to -.the Sunset Circle Club in Goderich, a social group of women who meet once a month. If she could •live • anywhere else other than Dungannon, •Mrs. _Park says she would Me to live in• the north where she and her husband take • vacations every summer. • She gets to practice her • photography, -another interest, on these vacations taking some "great shots" of scenery. • This past summer, Mrs. Park operated confectionery store out of her porch at'her home in. Dungannon. She was open very early in the morning and sometimes until late in theevenings • when other stores were closed and found her little business . venture - to be • quite a success. Ideally, she says, she would like to own a restaurant. • Mrs. • Park is a • collector. She has a spoon collection and has kept, scrapbooks of pictures • and newspaper ,clippings - since 1957. "I- keep everything," • she says adding that she has a record of all the births, weddings and deaths in Dungannon, CONTINUED ,ON PAGE 13 Hooking rugs is one of the latest hobbies for Mrs, Marle Park of Dungannon. She also likes cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening, reading, painting, bowling and .playing cards. She is the new Dungannon cortspendent for the Goderich Signal -Star and the Lucknow Sentinel.
