A • d Chapkiincy service provides pastoral care at hospital BY HENRY HESS A hospital can be a lonely place. for , a person- who is from out of town or has few friends or relatives in the area. And the need for companionship, advice or reassurance cannot, always be met, by the busy nurses and doctors. .This, is one ,of the basic reasons for the new volun- teer chaplaincy service es- tablished to provide pastoral . Care to patients at Wingham and District Hospital. The service, a joint . ven- ture of the hospital and area clergy, has been in operation. for just a month and is still. considered 'experimental'.. It is organized to provide a chaplain . either, at the hos- pital or on call 24 -hours a day throughout. the year.. ''Bach of the participating' ministers is 'on' for four days amonth. During thistime he or she spends an. hour at the hopital intheevening:. visit- ing with patients. and is also .on 24-hour call is a patient, should`'request. a chaplain. Bill. , Woodley, ,the new director of nursing, explains'; , the :pastoral careservace`as a reflection 'of the hospital's desire to treat the whole patient. "Only in recent times has the spiritual aspect been con- sidered essential if full heal- ' ing is to occur." Doctors want to treat the spiritual side of the patient, but lack the.minister's.exper- tise, he said. He noted that many hos- pitals are starting chaplaincy serd'ices and that provision of .such a service has even been tied into hospital accredita- tion standards: Under the '1977 revised standards a hospital must either . have: a pastoral. care. service or be working on one: " It is also part of the wholistic approach to health care, he added. Rev. John Swani of Wing - ham, the .co•ordinating.chap- lain-for the service, describ- ed a chaplain as a liaison between .the, patient and the hospitalstaff or. the family, adding he feels that healing and religion 'die. coming to-. getherlagain..The two were very close at the time of the Crusades, but later got wide..-;,. . ly separated, he said,1:. Both he and Mr: Woodley emphasized;;, the "service. •is strictly voluntary on both. • sides: it is not forced on anyone and is not intended to take the place of a patient's own minister. It is primarily aimed at filling the vacuum created when a patient is from out of town or cannot contact his or her own pastor. Nor is it limited to p'atieiits: the chaplains will also prov- ide counselling for hospital staff if requested.. Mr. Swan said the Wing - ham hospital. had a chaplain- cy service in the past but it wasn't really organized. Un- der, the current system an executive committee, com- posed of Rev: Robert -Arm-' strong of Wingham, Rev. Wilena Brown of 'Bluevale. and •Rev. ,William Munshaw of Lucknow, meets monthly. with .the co-ordinating. chap- , lain to iron out details. -Other: ministers particip- ating in the service are Rev. Barry Passmore, Rev. Ron Baker, Lt..'Iain Trainor, Rev., Tony Sonderup and . !Pastor Len Fex from: Wingham and Rev. ()mance Laramie from Fordwich. Mr Swam said he is hoping P g, to interest more -area . minist- ers in taking part so the time Commitment can be reduced.
