increases to the town employees ranging
from 5 81/2 per. cent, in acommittee of the
wholesession at the regular council
meeting, January .9:
Clerk Alf Herbert received a 5 per cent
increase taking him from a salary of $16,846
to $17,688; Town foreman Cliff Cra'Jvford will
be paid $6.24 and hour, an increase of 8'/z
per cent over last year's wage'of $5.75. Town
•employeeiary. Austin will receive a 7 per
cent hike from $5.57 to .$5.96 an hour:
Council received proposals from the town
employees at an in camera ,session at: the
`December council .meeting and took the
month., since that meeting, to consider the '
increases,✓ They . discussed the . increases
further at last Tuesday's .meeting and made
their decision, which was then presented to -
the town 'employees, .and the press.
AWAIT SUBSIDY'
In further council, business, Reeve George
Joynt told council he is still awaiting word
from the Ministry of Transportation and
Communication; as to anadditional subsidy
:of $10,000 for the village to put towards their
roads program. in : 1979,, The village has
applied for a construction subsidy of $25,200
which is the sum they have received in -past
years.
Retiring debentures and payments that.
cease. in,1979 has prompted council to apply
for an 'addttional.$10,000• bringing the total,
subsidy to ' $35,000.. If the subsidy is .
approved, the total amount to be spent on
road construction in thea village in 1979
would he $70,000 which includes the
,village's -share of $35,000.
FIRE COO DOWN
Reeve Joynt . said . at the meeting that
Lucknow's fire cost: has gone down since the
village entered into' a fire agreement with
the townships of Kinloss, West Wawanosh
and Ashfield. The net cost to the village for
fire protection in 1977 was $5,700. Luck-
now's cost.. for fire protection in 1978 was:

Superior Maintenance, who .do the. care-
taking at the town hall, requested,and were
granted *increase of $15 a month, bringing
their rate from 5135 to $150 a month. This is
the first increase in .two years and increased
cost of materials was cited as the reason for
the increase. '
HONORARIUMS
Council decided to keep their honorariums
in 1979 at the same level aslast year. The
reeve will receive, 5715and councillors will d
receive 5660, Councillors and the reeve will;
receive 522 for each special meeting they are
required to attend.

A second house fire in th&Lucknow area- in
the .past two : weeks has'• left.. three people
homeless. •
• The home of Art 'Woodcock in St. Helens
and its 'contents -were completely .destroyed
early Friday : mornurg Awby fife which is
thought to havekstartedin the cornerof the

Woodcock burned coal ,in the ••:stove•- to help : .
heat the. house.
Mr ,Woodcock, his housekeeper, Laurette
Ross and her 16 -year-old son., Chuck, nar-
rowly escaped `injury wh.en•they were awak
.ened':.by their cats meowing around 3 a.m-
Mrs: ::. R.ess ,:Jieard - the cats and . went
downstairs to see ,why they. Were making a::
fuss, . and discovered the main floor of the
house full of smoke. 'Her: screams:awakened
Mr W odcoek, and her:' son
TheyY' called the Lucknow District- Fire
Department. batt were forced from the bouse
by the intense smoke before they,could give
the location of 'the'fire .to Fire Chief ',George
Whitby:
The three fled to Allan Cranston's• home
next door .where they :Woke -the 'Cranstons .
and tiled :to call:the the fire department.. The
Cranston's phone was.,dead, becausethey
are on the same party line as Mr. Woodcock •

,Lucknow Village Councildecided at.their
January meeting to put up school zone signs
in the area ; of Lucknow : Central Public
School. '
The Lucknow Women's Institute received
a letter which was brought. to, Council, from
.Jack ;Bowers, Bruce' CCounty Board of
Education drector of education, stating that.
the responsibility of placing school signs in a
`school zone was not the board's but the
municipal or provincial government's obliga
tion.:
After •a' brief discussion, as to where the
signs were necessary, council decided that
school zone signs would be placed on
Highway 86 at the foot'of'Bob Street to warn
motorists coming into town that they are in a
school zone. Two signs• will, also be placed on
Rob Street, where it crosses Willoughby
Street, because the children are directed to
stake Willoughby Street,,: rather than. High-
way 86; tci `Havelock. to cross thehighway
where the crossing guard is stationed.
A dead end' sign will be placed at the end
of Bob Street to warn visitors to the
Pinecrest Nursing -Hoene that Bob Street is
not a through street.

Mr. Woodcock then went to the•`home of
Ross Errington, a block away, where he was
able to tarn in'the fire alarm. When the fire
department arrived, the fire:: was so far
advanced that , nothing could by done. -
Ttie ftre`. department' remained `on`•the
scene to•watch that the;fire did not Spread to
nearby buildings and they ;hosed down the
near side, of the :Cranston house.
The Lucknow District Christian School
Society decide to. begin 'construction of a
Christian School in Lucknow, in the spring of
1979 at a meeting on January 5, Fund raising
drives and a door to, door canvass will raise:
money for the school .

Lucknow and ' .District Christian School -
Society told the Sentinel in a letter, ,that the
school is not to be aschool'open to only a few.

education is *the best way to train a child,` "'.

Religious instruction not something. that
should.be•added to the\curriculum said Mrs.
Geertsma in the letter: "We want it to be an
integral part of the curriculum,"
The Lucknow District Christian School
Society was formed as the result of a
congregational meeting of the Lucknow
Christian Rerorrhed, Church in 1966. It was
decidedto establish a society .for Christian
education anda board of five members was
elected:'Since 1970 the Society,has purcfias•-
,ed i% acres Of land.east , of Lucknow on
highway 86, where the new school will be
built.
It is projected that classes will begin at the
new school id September, 1980:

!ipiey loses two
The R-ipley Ladies Curling rink had lost
two games and won one in cdinpetition at the
Southern Ontario Ladies Curling Finals in
Peterborough at press time Tuesday after-
noon.
The Ripley rink of Diane Brooks, Hilda
Andrew, Dianne Farrell and June Paquette,
left Sunday to compete in the three .day
event; which will decide the three teams .who
will advance to the all Ontario finals.
The Ripley rink is playing a round robin
•
.series with eight teams. On Monday
-morning they .defeated Stayner 9 5 and in
the afternoon lost to Orillia, 10 - 2. They
were defeated: again on Tuesday morning 10
-.4 by Oshawa. They were playing -Boulevard
Tuesday afternoon.

The rink ' advanced to the finals after
defeating last year's Ontario champs, the
London rink, at the Division 1 Ladies Curling
Finals in Kincard4ie two \ve\eks ago,
