.:On the way to their win, the . ladies
defeated the London:rink, last year's Ontario,
champions.
The Ripley rink played London on Wed-
nesday and were fleeced 13 a 3, They later
played Guelph and won 7 - 4.,On Thursday
morning they met Londoin again in the finals
and defeated fhem12 -'7.' •
"Maybe they were over confident,
because they had beaten us so badin the
first game," said. Hilda Andrew, of
Lucknow, ",but we wentout there deter'tnin-
ed•te give them a good game and we won."
The London rink was not to be put down
said Kilda, "They're good" and the Ripley
rink did`, not expect to .win the playdown
against' them. .
He went to :the basement Of the home and
found it filled with smoke... He then aroused
his children, Andrew, 12 and Susie; 10 and
called .the'fire department,
He •rettirned to the. basement to try' and
find, the source of the fire in the wall below
the fireplace, but dense smoke forced him to
return -;to the main ieyel of the house.
' When the fire department arrived they
tried to get at the fire in the wall behind th'e
fireplace;., but 'the dense smoke and a
problem with valves freezing hampered theii •
efforts. In their struggle with the blaze, the -
firemen ,emptied :their tanker truck and
pumped water from a neighbour's swim-
ming .pool,. using most of the water ins the
pool, in an attempt to bring the blaze under
control.
Lucknow Fire Chief, George ;Whitby said
that the fire is believed tohave started in the
wall behind the,firePlaceandthen worked its .:
way to the .attic.
As. yet, there. is noestimate of the
damage, but the house arid its content's were
complete destroyed.
