Strikes & Spares The Wingham "180 Sports" dropped two games over the week-end and now stand with a four loss, no win record. On Saturday, Wingham fans were treated to a good game of hockey as the Wiarton Redmen eked out a 4-3 victory, scoring the winning goal with less than three minutes to go in the game. On Sunday, Kincardine Bulldogs punched some big holes in the Wingham defen- sive squad and ended up 12-2 victors. In previous games, the "180 Sports" lost to Wiarton 8-4 and Kincardine 8-5. The Bulldogs are as yet undefeated, 111111111111111•1111111111111111111PIMMIIIIIMeg CROWN THEATRE HARRISTON - Admission Prices - Adults $1.00 Students 75c Children 40c WED. 6 - THUR. 7 • FRI. 8 Natalie Wood stars in this Technicolor sparkling comedy "PENELOPE" A romantic comedy about a young wife whose hobby is larceny, Wed. and Thurs. at 8:00 p.m. Friday at 7:15 and 9:05 p.m. SAT. 9 - MON. 11 • TUES. 12 "ARABESQUE" in Technicolor The stars Gregory Peck • Svphia Loren Ar:%-Pnture at its wildest - Dang- er - Spiced with lavish ro- mance - "ARABESQUE" means: All this and more Saturday at 7;15 and 9:05 p.m. FREE MERCHANTS' MATINEE SATURDAY AT 2:15 P.M. CLOSE GAME WITH WIARTON Wiarton opened the scoring at 3;30 as Davis took a pass from Fromager to bear Hickey from the face-off circle while Irwin sat out two minutes for a cheap tripping call. Just be- fore the goal, Hickey pulled off three good saves and Bate- son saved a possible goal by dropping in front of a shot. A slapshot by Bain from the blueline found the mark at 13:2'7 to tie the score 1-1. Wil- lie and Strong both picked up assists as they dug for the puck in a scramble in front of the Wiarton net. Just before the end of the first period Adams side-stepped Bateson in the centre ice zone and went in alone to score by deking Hickey at the last se- cond and sliding it into the open net, Skinn sat out five minutes of the period after clobbering Cole of Wiarton for about five- good ones before the refs got between them. It wasn`t en- tirely without cause as Cole had earlier broken his stick across Skinn's ankle and later the pair had a high sticking duel which led to the fight. A total of 17 penalties were hand- ed out in the first 20 minutes of hockey. SECOND PERIOD SCORELESS The two teams played good hockey in the middle frame as Wingham came out flying. Willie, in particular, was skating like the wind and the forward line of Irwin, Peacock and Brown looked classy but were unable to score, As the third period opened, Juniper was left uncovered in front of Hickey and took a pass from Adams to take a 3-1 lead at 1:05. Willie was sent to the penal- ty box for tripping and Strong and Vienneau did an excellant job at killing the advantage. At 7:45 Brown tipped in a pass from Irwin with Peacock also assisting to make it 3-2. Less than a minute later, the "180 Sports" tied the score as Peacock's long backhand caught the top left hand corner. Brown and Irwin assisted. Cole caught the refs eye for slashing but even shorthanded Wiarton managed to score. Skinn stopped a shot coming out of the Wiarton zone but lost it in his skates. As he turn- ed, the puck went to Adams who went all the way to fire high on Hickey's glove side for the score. Bateson chased him but was unable to throw him off-stride. Cub meeting The First Wingham Cub Pack opened the regular meet- ing in the gymnasium of the public school with the Grand Howl. Following inspection Kaa led the boys in games. After the study period bad- ges were presented to the fol- lowing: Pet Keeper, Rickey McKay; Tawny Star, Robert, Pollock and Carl Lee; car- penter, Bob Williams, Carl Lee and Robert Pollock, Wingham had two near misses before the final bell but the buzzer'sounded before they were successful. KINCARDINE 12 WINGHAM 2 Wingham came on strong with Peacock taking a 1-0 lead at 1:20 of the first while the "180 Sports" were shorthanded, Forrester off for slashing, Kin- cardine came back with three unanswered goals, by G. John- son, D. Shewfelt and Mag- wood before the period ended. Skinn scored for Wingham at 8;14 of the second, a long shot from the blueline which looked as if it could have deflected in- to the net off a skate. With the score 3-2, Wingham ap- • peared to be back in the game until the roof fell in and the Bulldogs scored four goals in less than four minutes, two listed on the score sheet as be- ing only one second apart -- McLeod, Hamilton, Magwood and McIntyre connecting. Wingham was blanked 5-0 in the third, McIntyre, McLeod and three by Magwood (for a total of five) gave the Bulldogs a 12-2 win. NOTES AND QUOTES The loss Sunday may have discouraged some of the players and fans but the "180 Sports" can't be expected to be on a par with teams which have played together for years, when most of Wingham's squad has had a five-year layoff... The team is picking up a following as a good number travelled to Kincardine to watch the game. MIDGETS DOWN LISTOWEL 11.4 In an exhibition game at Listowel on Sunday, Wingham Midgets flattened Listowel by a 11-4 count. Tommy Irwin and Carl Mowbray both turned the hat-trick while Rick Kenne- dy, Ken Rae, Don Hastings, Doug Mahood and Joe Kerr col- lected singles. The team's next game is against Cooksville at the Wingham arena, Friday night at 8: 00 p.m, BADMINTON PROVES VERY POPULAR About 25 participants turned out to the gym at the Wingham Public School On Monday night for the newly-formed Wingham Badminton Club. Joe Schneider was in form tonight with a single of 333 and Bill Johnston had the equipment. Jim reports that later in the year plans will be laid for a town basketball club and a volleyball club.
