I guess when it comes to all-
round acting genius, and a
vast knowledge of what the be*.
ness is all about, you would
have to hand the honors to
Robert Christie Father of the
Hatch family on the CBC-TV
series "Hatch's Mill", But
young son Saul, as played by
Marc Strange, is no slouch
either, and becoming a fast-
rising star in the acting depart-
ment,
Marc was born in the Ottawa
Valley and when he was six,
his family moved to Kitchener
where he played Robin Hoed
and Huckleberry Finn in child-
ren's radio drama. He made
his stage debut when he was
nine, playing in "Our Town" in
Kitchener-Waterloo Little
Theatre. When he had finished
Grade 11 he became a high
school dropout and worked at a
variety of jobs in Canada and
the U.S. He then tried his
luck at singing - in Toronto
folk-houses, Whether or not
he had much luck in his sing-
ing career, we don't know,
but if nothing else, he got a
wife out of the deal. His
missus, Lynn Ward, was a pro-
fessional folksinger, a member
of the Allen-Ward Trio.
From his singing, ate landed
some roles in theatre produc-
tions and from there went to
television, then back to stage,
where he played in such pro-
ductions as "The Typists",
"Under the Yum-Yum Tree",
and "Marriage-Go-Round".
These led to the Saul role in
"Hatch's Mill", and from there
the road has been all downhill.
December 13th, at 9:30 on
"Festival", Marc will star in
"The Paper People" , story
about young artist Jamie Tay-
lor, And as you watch him at
work in that , he will be soak-
ing up the sun in Hollywood,
where he is now working on his
new assignment - playing the
lead role in a new TV series
called "U.S.". He also has a
CTV drama entitled "The
Rumble of Silence" under his
belt, and co-stars 'with young
French doll Genevieve Bujold
in "Irabel", a Paramount pic-
ture filmed on the Gaspe Pen-
insula, and not yet released.
In the future, Marc hopes to
be able to direct some 'U.S.'
episodes later, and probably
write some, then perhaps -- to
write, direct and possibly star
in his own films. Big dreams
for a young guy, but he'll prob-
ably make it. He sure seems
to be well on his way!
More exciting shows up-and-
coming, are 60 minutes of Al
Hirt and his trumpet, with
singer Shirley Bassey, and our
own impressionist Rich Little,
Sunday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.;
and a December 14th "Cana-
dian School Telecasts" special
presentation of Welsh writer
Dylan Thomas' " A Child's
Christmas in Wales", This
will be at 10 a.m.; you will
hear Thomas' voice reading
his story. It will be just the
beginning of many exciting
Christmas shows, which we will
toss around in a later column,
