Thornbury CemeterY• JAMES MILLER CHIEF OF POLICE -al • RIguininisignammoommounimaimumisommininior Keith McClure There is an easy way to make a brand new, finely tuned automobile ride like a truck by adding only ten ounces to the body weight. The trick is to fasten that weight in equal, five-ounce portions to one spot on each front tire rim. Then drive it at 60 mph. You'd never recognize it as the same car. For instance, only two ounces of imbalanced weight on a wheel hits the pavement at 214 pounds pressure at 40 mph, 482 pounds at 60 mph, and 856 pounds at 80 mph. If this imbalanced weight was concentrated on one side of the wheel only, then dynamic imbalance, or cross-shake shimmy, would add to the car's vibration. This shortens the life of the body, shocks and tires. By and large, only 15 different types of wheels are pro- duced for passenger cars compared with some 800 for trucks. One reason that all tire-mounted wheels need balancing is that no wheel is perfectly round. Thirty years of effort by manufacturers has so far not produced perfect roundness- 360 degrees of curvili — near perfection — in the 60 million or so new wheels mass produced for the North American market each year. A "radial runout" of about 1/32 of an inch is manufactur- ing tolerance; this is compensated by the dealer's wheel balancing.
