cine only immunizes ES to 85
percent of the people on which
it is used. "The problem is
that we have no way of know-
ing—out of 100 innooulations
with BCG, for example--
whichhave been immunized
and which have not. Once the
innoculation is given, all re-
ceivers will henceforth show a
"positive reaction" to a tuber,
culin test, A total immuniza-
tion program with BCG would
therefore be only partly effec-
tive. It would negate the tu-
berculin test, which is the
most important technique for
discovering and controlling
Tuberculosis at the present
time," Dr. Sturgeon said.
"Nor do we yet possess anti-
bodies that will cure Tubercu-
losis in everyone," Dr. Stur-
geon said. "There is still a
percentage -- at least five per-
cent of our population—on
which present-day drugs have
no effect. Research is continu-
ing in this area, as well as in
the perfection of BCG to 100
percent effectiveness," he
said,

The spirit
of Christmas
Let your home sing with the
,spiritof,Chrisitmas this year.
Decor expert i`ukeit you, use
all of the aeces'sories• Aye
season to create a seasonal at-
mosphere throughout your
home.
The cards you receive, for
instance, all those colorful
mementos from friends and re-
latives, can become part of the
Christmas decoration of your
home. Hung on ribbon around
doorways and in windows, they
let the spirit of Christmas shine,
inside and out, and the atmos-
phere of the season will sing
around you.
Cards can be used as decora-
tions on the tree. Each type of
card can be fitted into a small
decor unit of its own. For in-
stance, take all the religious
cards and those of an inspira-
tional theme which you receive
and build a small creche in the
corner of the living room, us-
ing the cards as the elements,
especially if you have a nativi-
ty sculpture set which you dis-
play in your home during this
most beautiful of seasons.
Another corner of the room,
possibly near the Christmas
tree, could be used as the Santa
Claus corner. All the cards
bearing Santa's likeness --
even the funny ones of animals
dressed up in Santa's hat --
can be put together in this
children's corner.
The traditional snow scenes ,
gathered together, can trans,-
form an area into a small art
gallery. The humorous and
contetnporary Christmas cards
from your more comical friends
can convert a space into a
Rogue's Gallery of Christmas
humor.
Intersperse these lively,
lovely motifs with ribbons and
bows to add to the Christmas-
time flavor. In many cases
the scenes can to "tied togeth-
er" with ribbon. Use cotton
wool or tinsel around your
Christmas pictUratnat.

1400 CASES LAST YEAR
Tuberculosis especially.
high in the rural areas
"In Ontario, where 5,0 00,
000 people lack immunity to
Tuberculosis and at least 20
per cent of the population oat-
ties the germ, the objectives of
the 1967 Christmas Seal cam-
paign are clearly defined," Dr.
L. W. C. Sturgeon, president
Ontario TO Association said.
Tuberculosis is still the most
important infectious disease in
Canada, and in the world to-
day--in spire of drugs and sel-
ective use of vaccines," said
Dr. Sturgeon. "Nearly 1, 500
active cases of Tuberculosis
were found in Ontario last year
and the incidence of the dis-
ease is especially high in the
urban areas," he said.
Forty-seven volunteer Tuber
culosis organizations in Ontario
this month mailed out more
than lz million packages of the
familiar Christmas Seals with
the double-barred red cross.
"We are particularly con-
cerned with the susceptibility
of children to Tuberculosis,"
Dr. Sturgeon said. He explain-
ed that "Positive reactions" to
tuberculin tests in children
usually mean that the child has
been in recent contact with an
active undiscovered case of the
disease. "Statistically, one
child in ten, reacting positively
will develop active Tuberculo-
sis unless preventive treatment
is administered.
Unlike many adults, young
children have little or no ac-
quired immunity to the dis-
ease," Dr. Sturgeon stated.
The OTA president describ-
ed the famous BCG Tubercu-
losis vaccine as "useful but
only in some circumstances."
