Sixty-five descendants from Willowdale, Oakville, CooksVille, Stoney Creek, Chatham, Georgetown, Elora, Owen Sound, Elmira, Listowel and Gorrie, and from Saskatchewan attended. Prizes were given for the eldest and youngest, couple married the longest and those coming the greatest distance. Officers elected for 1968 were: Pres., Wm. Austin of Listowel; sec.-treas.. Mrs. Murray Johnson of Willowdale; historians, Mrs. Gordon Orr of Willowdale and Miss Ida Cro- mar of Elora. Edward Day and his wife Mary Ross, a nurse, came to Canada in 1842. He was a band leader in the British Army in India and was for seven years in the service of the East India Company. He bought a farm at Elora when he came to Canada. There are over 300 descendants of Edward and Mary Day now living in Canada, approximate- ly 100 in Ontario. William Austin of Gorrie is a great- grandson. Cathers, Wroxeter and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Halliday of Wingham attended the 50th wedding anniversary dinner held at the Twin Gables, Listowel, of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Earl of Atwood, formerly of Ethel, on Sunday. There were 30 guests. The bride of 50 years ago was the former Eva Clegg, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clegg of Gorrie community. Mr. Earl is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Earl, Gorrie south. The couple farmed for 45 years near Ethel, moving just recently to Atwood. They have two sons, Arnold of Ot- tawa and Chester of Ethel and three daughters, Mrs. Wm. (Bertha) Searson of Kitchener, Mrs. Jas. (Reita) Dunbar of Wroxeter R.R. 2, and Mrs. Wm. (Laura) Peebles, Atwood. There are twelve grandchildren. Miss Lavonne Searson, a granddaughter, flew from Eng- land on Sunday to attend the dinner. Local agent receives award C. Wilford Caslick was pre- sented with a ninth-year Na- tional Quality award at a re- cent meeting of the Saugeen Life Underwriters' meeting held in Clifford. He was one of nine to receive an award, ranging from first to twentieth years. In recognition of writing of quality business, conservation of business in force indicating a continuing good service to clientel, the awards are spon- sored jointly by the Life Insur- ance Agency Management As- sociation, the Canadian Life Insurance Officers Association and the National Life Under- writers Association of Canada. The October session of West Wawanosh Township Council was held on October 3rd with all members in attendance. The minutes of the regular Sep- tember meeting and a special meeting on September 8th, were adopted. The weed inspector for Hur- on County, Alex Chesney, at- tended the meeting and the weed problem in Dungannon and other parts of the township was thoroughly discussed. It was agreed by all present that next year an early attack on the weeds in the township would be undertaken. Murray Wilson and Donald Murray appeared before coun- cil on behalf of the West Wa- wanosh Federation of Agricul- ture, who find their funds in short supply. A by-law setting the various rates for the township and au- thorizing the collection of said rates, was given third reading and finally passed. Taxes this year are to be paid at the bank rather than the township treas- urer. A by-law authorizing the nomination of reeve, council- lors and school trustees and election, if necessary, was giv- en third and final reading. Nom- ination is set for November 24th at 1 p.m. The Murray Drainage Works by-law, authorizing the work to be undertaken and the borrow- ing of funds, if necessary to complete the work, was given first and second reading. The Court of Revision from the as- sessments in the report of the engineer will be held Novem- ber 7th, at 10130 a.m. The road superintendent was directed to apply for the inter- im subsidy on road expenditures amounting to $79, 905.00.
