WHY IS HIGH SPEED UNSAFE? Keith McClure It isn't unsafe by itself for full-sized, modern, well-kept vehicles built for high speed. The problem lies in the fact that good-conditioned cars must share the road with many that are unsafe at 20 mph because of defective brakes, tires ready to blow and a steer- ing mechanism that could break down at any time. Highway traffic accident statistics provide the evidence: At 75 mph there is one fatality for every 8 accidents, at 65 mph one in 20, at 55 one in 50. In England, a law limiting speed to 70 mph on roads that previously had no limit was passed in 1965. A 20 percent decrease was recorded in expected accidents immediately, showing unmistakable evidence that greater road casualties were related to speed. As speed increases, so do stresses and strains on vehicles with weak points in their mechanisms. Tailgating is one ex- ample of the cause of many accidents involving cars with in- adequate brakes. Brakes that do not bear evenly on all wheels pull the car to one side in a panic stop, causing it to swerve into the path of oncoming traffic, or else they simply fail to stop the car in time. Highway-driven cars are frequently overloaded, leading to excessive heat in worn tires and wheel bearings that are controlling upwards of two tons of metal.
