WROXETER,John liupfer, R, R, Wroxeter mail courier, retired on March 31 after 40 years' service, He was 86 years old last October and is in good health. Mr. Hupfer is wonder,- lag now if lie has made a mis- take as it is going to be hard to fill that time, but he may take a trip this summer. He is not the travelling type and has not gone far in the past years ex- cept for a couple of trips to De- troit and several visits with his daughter, Mrs. Blair. (Betty) Sharp of Sarnia. He worked as assistant thresh- er, at ditch dredging work, and then took up farming on Con- cession d Howick, He then moved to a farm on the bound- ary line between Howick and Turnberry. in 1927 he sold this farm to the late Frank F, Wright and purchased the farm on which he now resides from John Doig. He found he also acquired the duties of rural mail courier from Mr. Doig, lie served faithfully, often beyond required duties to get the mail delivered by cutter, buggy and car. His route cov- ered 221 miles south and east of Wroxeter and it has been esti- mated by the London Free Press that he has travelled 101 times around the earth and has done this accident free -- not even a dented fender. lie had 52 box- holders and there are only five left that were patrons on his first run. He has outlasted five or six cars. For the past 29 years he has been assisted by his housekeep- er, Miss Hazel Sparling, who has also given her best to ful- fill her duties. She recalls that after Mr, Ilupfer no longer had a horse, anti when roads were too soft in some places in the spring for the car, she often walked and carried the mail for distances of 2Ji and 3 miles along two different roads where she would again meet Mr. Hup- fer for tire rest of the trip.Rules and regulations did not call for this but they took their duties seriously and always fulfilled them to the best of their ability, Most of the patrons were very co-Operative, There were a number of patrons who always made certain they had a path shovelled to their boxes which was appreciated. The new mail courier, Art Gibson of Wroxeter has taken over the route and with his wife Eleanor will continue to give faithful service, DIRECTORS of the Huron-Bruce Progres- sive Conservative association are seen chat- ting with Agriculture Minister William Stewart, guest speaker at the nomination meeting which named Roger West as candi- Wingham Advance-Times, Thursday, April d, 19d7 BerreRIOODSHMILI FRESH PORK Picnic LB Shoulder shouiderill BUTT. 55c sCHOPS " 'BO; SST LB 89` FACELLE ROYALE — 333s FACIAL TISSUES 3'89' STOKELY'S 14-oz.
