PERCY DEYELL, BUTCHER
Centennial Anthem will be sung
at first ceremony New Year's Eve
Earlier this year, the Can,
adian Interfaith Conference
asked Dr. Healey Willan to
write the music and Robert
Choquette, now Consul ,.Gen-
eral at the Canadian Consulate
in Bordeaux, France, the words
for a new hymn in French and
English to commemorate Can-
ada's,Centennial Year. It was
a successfu], collaboration.
Their work was so praised by
the conference that it is now
designated as the official Cen-
tennial Anthem and will be
sung at the first ceremonies
celebrating Centennial on New
Year's Eve.
At 7 p.m., December $1,
on Ottawa's Parliament Hill,
a choir made up of more than
200 voices will sing the an-
them, accompanied by the
Peace Tower carillon, played
by Robert Donnell. The first
presentation of the anthem will
take place during the flame-
lighting ceremonies of the
Fires of Friendship -- the be-
ginning of the year of celebra-
tions for Canada's 100th birth-
day.
The anthem was originally
to be a hymn to be sung in
churches, but the magnitude of
the work by Dr. Willan and Mr.
Choquette made it more suit-
able for presentation by profes-
sional choirs. A new Centen-
nial Hymn for churches is be-
ing written by Rev. Kenneth
Moyer, of Niagara Falls, the
Rex Le Lacheur, of Ottawa.
The following are the Eng-
lish words of the Centennial
Anthem:
Glory to Thee, Creator! Praise
and adoration

her plains and river-ways,

Dear Ann Landers: My hus-
band is fighting in Viet Nam.
He writes to me as often as he
can, Of course X worry about
him a great deal because he is
an infantryman in the thick of
the battle.
Every letter from Boyd is.
Precious and I consider it high-
ly personal. My problem is his
mother who lives in this city. I
admit we never (had a very good
relationship.
My another-in-law has asked
me to call her when I receive
a letter from Boyd, I resent
this, He is a 24-year-old man—
no longer her "child." If he
wants her to know how he is he
can write and tell her,
It's very hard for a young
wife to be separated from her
husband especially under these
conditions, Boyd's letters are
the only link I have with him
now and I don't want to share
even the knowledge that I have
received a letter. Do you under-
stand, Ann? Please tell me you
d o.--P OSSESSIVE.
Dear Possessive; Yes, I under-
stand. I understand that you are
a selfish, cold-hearted girl Who
is in for plenty of grief if this
is the philosophy you plan to
live by.
Your mother-in-law did not
ask you to share Boyd's letters
with her, She asked only if you
would let her know then you
received word from him. And
you consider this an intrusion??
How is he intruding? Even the
postman knows you've heard.
A son is his mother's child as
long as he lives. But you won't
appreciate the full meaning of
this until you have a son of
your own. Arid if you do have
a son, I hope his wife treats
you with more kindness and
compassion than you are show-
ing your mother-in-law,

Dear Ann Landers: Our 19-
year-old son is going with a
girl who said she was 16. She
seemed awfully young to me so
I checked with the Board of
Education, She is in the ninth
grade and is 14 years old,
Our son is with her every
evening and often comes ;home
at 3:00 a.m. Both my husband
and I are concerned, but we
can't tell a 19-year-old boy
whom to take out or what time
to come home. He has a good
job, pays room and board and
wants to live at home. Please
advise.---UPSET,
Dear Upset; The girl's parents
must be out of their minds to
give a 14-year-old such a Jong
rePe, She 001114 easily hang
herself—and your son as well,.
Let biro know that you are
aware of the girl's age, Per-
haps be is not, Don't order him
to stay away from her but see
that he has all the facts,

Dear Ann Landers: The letter
signed "Ape" brought back
memories. I feel sorry for the
boy whose buddies gave hint
that nickname, Obviously he
hasn't learned how to cope with
it. Maybe I can help.
When I was a high school
freshman my nickname was
"Apey." I was only 5 feet 8
inches tall but I had unusually
long arms, My reach measured
74 inches.
Of course I didn't like it, but
no one ever knew. When the
kids yelled, "Hi 'Apey," I'd grin
and yell, "Hi." When they dis-
covered their efforts to rile me
fell flat, they stopped.
My advice, to anyone who sud-
denly finds himself with an un-
flattering nickname is to ignore
it. If the victim refuses to rise
to the bait, the name will be
dropped.—FARGO FOTOG,
Dear Fotog: Thanks for a
chunk of sage advice, You prov-
ed that it's hard to laugh at
someone who can laugh at him-
self.
