Stratford has two highlights
coaling up in its Centennial
Year at its now-famous Shakes-
pearean Theatre, Sounds like
an exciting year for our little
Western Ontario city that in
summertime, takes en all the
aura and glamour of a little
Hollywood.
The festivities will begin as
early as January, which means
that the Festival perfumers will
be kept busy most of our Cen-
tennial Year, The reason for
the early rehearsal date is a
cross-country tour which the
cast will make, beginning in
February. This is a first for the
actors and actresses, and it is
fitting that it is begun in Cen-
tennial Year. If response is
good, they may even continue
the trend and make the tour an
annual one.
They are presenting two
plays -- Shakespeare's "Twelf-
th Night", one of the plays that
made such a hit last season at
Stratford, and Nikolai Gogol's
comedy "The Government In-
spector". Performers in the
Shakespearean play include Leo

chey. Its director is David Wil-
liam, music by louis Apfle-
baum, designs by Brian tack-
son -- all these the original
' team that made it so sneeessfni
last year, The two alaineilai-
acters in the Russian play, will
be portrayed by Bill Hutt and
Tony Van Bridge, two or oar
finest. Also feau,..red will be
Mr. Cieeri, .Mr. Behrens, Ani-t
elia Hall, Max lielpmann, and
a number of the afore-mention-
ed stars, Its director will be
the great Michale Langhain,
and how fitting that lie, who
has done so much for Canadian
Theatre, sho;ild be returning on
her Centennial Year. Designing
for this play will be done by
Leslie flurry.
The plays will open on Feb-
ruary a ath in Calgary, and will
take the troupe to Victoria,
Vancouver, Winnipeg, Frederic-
; ton, Charlottetown, Halifax,
St. Johns, and Ottawa, where
it will close on`.larch 23rd,
The Company will then return
to Stratford, for rehearsals for
their summer season there.
Which brings us to our sec-
ond highlight: Chris Plummer
is corning home: ies, our na-
tive boy is returning for Can-
ada's birthday, after a number
of years and successful Broad-
way shows and movies ("The
1 Sound of Music", "Inside Daisy
Clover") under his belt: Three i cheers to him for not getting a
I swelled head and thinking Can-
! ada too little for him now, af-
ter all his success and fame!
The plays this year sound
absolutely fantastic: "Inspec-
tor", of course, will be continu-
ing at Stratford, after its tour,
and will be joined by Shakes-
peare's "Richard III", "Antony
and Cleopatra" and "The Mer-
ry Wives of Windsor". Chris
Plummer will play the title role
in 'Richard' and Antony in the
Shakespearean romance. His
Cleopatra will be Australian
actress Zoe Caldwell.' That
play will be directed by Mi-
chael Langham, with designs
by Tanya Moiseiwitsch.
David William will work
this year on 'Merry Wives of
Windsor', and 'Richard' will be
directed by John Hirsch, and
designed by Desmond Heeley.
The season will open on
June 12th and run until October
14th, with a performance to be
given later at Expo 67, the site
of the World's Fair. At the
Avon Theatre, you will be able
to see Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tut-
re" ('Women Are Like That'),
Benjamin Britten's "Albert Her-
ring", and a third play to be
announced later.
Sounds like a great year, eh
what? We'd better not be drag-
ging our britches, though; tick-
ets are bound to go like hot- .
cakes! So if you want any, or-
der early.
