HOW MUCH
DO YOU WANT
A SAFE CAR?
Keith McClure
The contrariness of human nature makes merchandising
experts age prematurely, Here's an example of why:
The National Safety Council recently made a survey of
why many people Who had seat belts installed in their ears
refused to wear them. The answers aren't too surprising to ontritrsafkeetitn3eg. men who have experienced the low sales appeal
A very large percentage of motorists said that seat belts
brought unpleasant images of wrecks and injury to their
minds. By not using the belts they blanked out the un-
pleasant image and thereby felt safer.
Most motorists conceded that the belts might sieve their
lives but couldn't be bothered using them. Women com-
plained that the helts Wrinkled their clothing arid , many men thought they were "sissified" though "all right for wo-men and ehilldren."
In every auto accident there are two collisions. One
when the body of the car strikes art object. A second one
when the bodies of the occupants strike the inside of the
car. The second collision does the human damage,
Ti a car body was built like a Sheermin tank, nothing idiown today but a seat belt could stop the deadly second
Seat belts create pleasant images too. And they have
social significance. I'm retailided of the hobby-sox teenager
saying to her friend as her fiance drove off in his &inver-tible: "I just kilo* Alvin is faithful. His seat belt NZVEft needs adjusting,"
with Mrs. Pearl Patterson and
other relatives in the commun-
ity.
