VANDONGEN BY HEATHER HUESTON 11B Among the new teachers to be welcomed to our district is Mr. Vandongen who is engaged in this, his first teaching posi- tion. He was born in Holland and received his secondary school- ing there. To become a teach- er was his main aspiration as a student and this was fulfilled when he graduated from Al- thouse college in London, On- tario. Mr. Vandongen is presently teaching boys' occupations and thoroughly enjoys this contact with the students. He feels, though, that the pupils of W.D. ai.s. should make better use of the excellent opportunity avail- able to them. He wishes to continue his own education by obtaining a B.A. degree in technical subjects when this course becomes available. iTr1171 AND DEBENTURE COMPANY WJ / BY DONNA MALICK Mr. Roberson was born in Hamilton and was educated there. For excitement in his life he toured across Canada and back. But perhaps the most exciting highlight in his life came about when he won a judo tournament in Stratford. Science Club BY BARB FEAGAN 10E Under the watchful eyes of Mr. Wilson the Science Club of W.D.H.S. began its new year on Oct. 24, with seventeen members present. At this meeting the follow- ing executive was elected: President, John Martyn; vice- president, Gary Bauer; and sec- retary-treasurer, Barb Feagan. Also at this meeting Mr. Wilson pointed out that our Science Club was to be inter- esting and lots of fun without being tiresome. Although plans for the com- ing year are not yet finalized I feel that there will be activi- ties to interest almost every- one. Among these are films, debates, lectures, perhaps a trip near the end of the year, and last but certainly not least, a project for the Science Fair, which has been held at our school for the past three years. Each member present at the meeting gave a suggestion for lectures or debates, and some very interesting subjects were brought up. So if you're looking for an excuse to get out of that study class Tuesday afternoons, and for something more interesting and lively, come out to our Science Club in room 240 and join in the fun. Teen Topics INTERVIEWER BRIAN CASLICK 13 The question for this week was "What do you think of boys who drive fast and recklessly?" This question was chosen main- ly for the benefit of the boys, Girls of various ages were asked for their comments, 0--0--0 Grade nine girl: "I don't like it, It is senseless and danger- ous." 0--0--0 Grade ten girl: "This sort of driving does not impress me. It is stupid and dangerous." 0--0--0 Grade eleven girl: " It's nut- ty. This sort of person is only a show off. If they think driv- ing like that is the only way to get attention they must not have many brains," 0--0--0 Grade twelve girl: "Showing off while driving is ridiculous. Girls are not impressed. It en- dangers lives, ruins the car and gives the person a bad reputa- tion. Bad reputations will lead to no dates," 0--0--0 Grade thirteen girl: "I don't like it. I like a safe driver and a gentleman and neither one would drive like that." 0--0--0 So get wise guys. It seems that there is no benefits or fu- ture in driving fast or reckless. The girls don't like you any better for driving that way, and if you are not in good with the girls watch out; you're going to get nowhere fast. Receives Degree BELGRAVE--Mr, and Mrs. Bruce Hamilton of Lucknow, Mrs. Jas. Walsh of R, R.4, Brus- sels and Mr. Edgar Wightman, Belgrave, attended the gradu- ation exercises at Waterloo on October 28 when Anne Wight- man received her Bachelor of Arts degree. Anne is a gradu- ate of Wingham District High School and is at present attend- ing Knox College in Toronto. He is proud to display an orange belt for his efforts but his am- bition is to obtain a black belt, and he would like to start judo at the Wingham District High School. At the school, Mr. Rober- son is an electrical teacher and this is a very suitable profes- sion for one who says "I enjoy working with my hands." He says he enjoys the six-day cycle in the school schedule because it makes the day go faster and you don't have the same class- es every Monday and Friday. He cannot understand why it is that the teachers seem to cheer louder than the students. His philosophy is expressed as "Seiryoku Zenyo Kukumin taiiker" (translation "Maximum efficiency with a minimum of effort. The special highlight of his life was considered by Mr. Vandongen to be his honey- moon trip made by boat, to Canada nine years ago and I am sure we must all agree. His hobbies include dancing, airplane models and playing soccer. He and his family now reside in Bluevale and enjoy the small community life. His main wish is for every- one to work together toward the one goal of happiness and pros- perity. Mr. Vandongen's mot- to is that a person who does the best he can will eventually ar- rive at the goal he wants. We wish Mr. Vandongen all the success in his career at W.D.H.S. and in all his fut- ure endeavours, People criticize an old man for marrying a young girl, but it's his money, after all. ,*•:•• 114;& tie*?g, 4 # BY DIANNE GROVE 12E Once.more the senior girls' volleyball team is in progress, and this year is under the excel- lent coaching of Mrs. Under- wood. Throughout the last few weeks the girls have had a cou- ple of exhibition games. The first of these started three weeks ago when Ripley came to Wing- ham. Wingham came out on top with the score of.15-10 for Wingham in the first game, 15- 11 for Ripley in the second game and 15-9 for Wingham in the last game. Last week the second exhibi- tion game found the girls in Listowel. Unfortunately for Wingham, (although ListoWel doesn't think so!) we lost all 'three games to the scores of , 15-4, 15-1, 15-5, in that or- der. --- You can't win them all! ! Also last week Ripley vent- ured back to play the girls ALMA CONN received the E. Gregory Award for general proficiency in Grade XI at the Commencement recently. Senior Girls' Volleyball once more. Losing one set of games in one week was enough for the team, so with determin- ation they went on to be vic- tors over Ripley by winning three out of three games. Play- ing the best games they have yet, and showing their true "skills" there scores ended up as follows: 15-3; 15-6; 15-1. Next week we hope the re- sults will be the same when Lis- towel returns to Wingham for another set of games. I would like to say that the girls are working hard this year, 4GARDENS TREASURE ISLAND SHOPPING CENTRE PHONE 434.1148 LONDON, ONTARIO of WORLD'S GREATEST ICE SPECTACULAR 7 fabulous Productions Nov. 8 - Nov. 13 p..sa90t:,0? &a sn.p.m. E GS: Tues., Fri„ 8:30 p.m. Sun , 2:30 p.m. TICKET PRICES $2.00, $2.50, $3.00, $3.50 (tax Included)
