Wojeck" was a real break
for Jennifer Leak. She wants to
be an actress, and her role as
Gale Fletcher in the two part
series 'The Cold Smile of
Friends' served as her introduc-
tion to Canadian audiences in a
dramatic role. The episodes
were seen on the CBC on Octo-
ber 4th and 11th. Her face is
not new to Canadians. At the
ripe old age of 18, she is one of
the country's top teen models -
in fashion magazines, TV com-
mercials, and fashion shows.
She is also extremely lucky
in that she has lived almost 'all
over the world'. She was born
in Cardiff, Wales, came to
Canada (Nova Scotia) when she
was seven, went back to Wales
a few years later, then was off
to Jerusalem, then back to Eng-
land at the age of 14, and then
to Montreal. She first became
interested in acting in Israel,
and played a lead role in a
school production in England,
winning an award for her ef-
forts. When she came to Mont-
real she finished high school and
began working in a bank, spend-
ing her evenings at a drama
course and modelling school.
The modelling won out and last
year when she came to Toronto,
she had no trouble getting work
as a model. She had to audi-
tion for the role in' Wojeck"
but had little trouble winning
it. Maybe this is the beginning
of an entirely new career for
Jennifer Leak. What will be
television's gain, will obvious-
ly be the modelling world's loss!

"The Mills of the Gods" has
won yet another award for
greatness. It was selected Best
Television Film at the ninth an-
nual Vancouver International
Film Festival, held recently in
the B.C. city. 'Mills of the
Gods' is Beryl Fox's master-
piece about the war in Viet
Nam. It was first seen on the
CBC series entitled "Document"
last December. Its producer
was Douglas Leiterman who is
now working in the U.S., the
cameraman who travelled with
Miss Fox into the Viet Namese
jungles was Erik Durschmied.
It has also received awards as
Film of the Year at the presen-
tation of Canadian Film Awards;
the third annual CBC Wildeme::$
Award, and the George Polk
Memorial Award from Long Is-
land University in New York.

Another season has ended at
the Stratford Shakespearean
Festival. The actors and act-
resses are packing up and leav-
ing Stratford, the little town
that bustles each summer, next
thing to a ghost-town! It was
another successful year. The

Show Biz

season was extended in length
,E again this year, If it is made
much longer it will provide
year-round employment for our
Canadian stars. As it is now,
they begin rehearsals in the ear-
ly spring, which means they
are idle only during the winter
if they can't find anything ap-
pealing elsewhere. This would
be a good thing for many of
them, but for the very-talented
their roles would be extremely
limited.

It was ironic that at the very
time that Eric Fleming's death
was reported, he was starring in
two segments of Bonanza on
CBC-Television.

There is a marvellously en-
tertaining show coming up for
the kids at Hallowe'en time. It
will star the 'Peanuts' of the
comic strips, but more about
that in next week's column.
Meanwhile, for the sportsmen,
NHL Hockey begins another new
season this Saturday night (the
22nd). Boston Bruins will play
Montreal Canadiens and New
York Rangers will tackle the
Maple Leafs. So settle down to
another winter of watching hoc-
key. To which I can only say -
Yickll Ah well, at least I can
be bored in colour this year!
