The Influence Is International, The Keyword comfort in Furniture
Canadian furniture manu-
facturers are looking to the
Nlediterranean lot warm colors
and rich textures; to the Orient
for crisp, slim lines; to the
French countryside for a multi-
plicity of patterns -- and to
Canada for inspiration..
While variety is rite spice of
life, such a wide choice of
furniture styles makes success-
ful decorating a tricky business.
What goes with what, !nix-
ing and matching of patterns,
wood, tones, furniture styles, all
present a problem to tire aver-
age decorator who wants to re-
do a root or her entire home.
To serve as a guide in suc-
cessful decorating, several
prominent Canadian firms have
joined forces to create decora-
tor-designed room settings for
the average Canadian home, In
a wide variety of styles, the
room settings will be reproduc-
ed in fine furniture stores across
the country. Not only the basic
furniture and floor coverings,
but the accessories that put the
finishing touches on any room,
are subtly blended. The end
result -- room settings that can
be reproduced in their entirety
or can serve as an inspiration to
any home owner.
The key points to watch, say
the team of decorators who
created the room settings, are
the use of natural materials --
rich warm wood tones, textur-
ed fabrics, beautifully bared
floors.
Watch for enriched fabrics
and colors -- velvet in all its
variations as well as other fab-
rics of depth and richness. Blue
is the big color but a color
scheme of growing importance
is neutral with a Angle color
accent. 130(4,144; with the
Mediterranean theme, terra-
cotta and other gold-brown
tones continue in importance.
Patterns are Seen every-
where and they're 'nixed to per-
fection. Paisley and stylized
geometries are Important. Win-
dows take on special meaning.
Modern window dressing nleans
far more than a pair of drapes.
Floors are no longer smother,
ed in carpets. All influences
point to a natural look for floors
with area rug accents. Con-
temporary floor coverings re-
produce the infinite beauty of
travertine, mosaic, tile, wood
tones and cork to provide sur-
face interest that's in keeping
with the room setting and sup-
remely easy to care for.
Upholstered furniture offers
a large complement of com-
fort than ever before, manag-
ing to combine deep soft cush-
ions with trim, slim lines.
Lovely wood grains make
their appearance in case goods
whose lines often reproduce the
graceful curves 01 Spanish furni-
ture but lightened and scaled
down to fit the Canadian home.
Home entertainment units
are now matching their designs
to the current furniture themes.
Stereo sets appear in Spanish,
Oriental and contemporary de-
signs to complement any room
decor.
INDICATING THE "total look" in home
decorating, this display features Spanish
influence in the comfortable yet elegant
upholstered furniture, complemented by
octagonal coffee table and occasional
pieces, the home entertainment unit and
floor. Wrought iron design is achieved
by a single panel of wallpaper, cut around
the design to form an arch effect.
CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN furniture de-
signs are influenced by the fashions of the
thirties. Room setting designed by lead-
ing Canadian companies illustrates the to-
tally modern look of traditionally influen-
ced lines and patterns. The home enter-
tainment unit with circular speakers at
either end blends with curving lines of the
dining room suite. The cork floor adds
tawny texture interest to a room that fol-
lows a predominantly neutral color
scheme.

Frozen Apples
Ready for Baking
The ranks of frozen con7
venience foods have a new re-
cruit -- stuffed apples ready for
baking.
This new heat-and-cat des-
sert was developed at the Can-
ada Depatttrient of Agriculture's
research station in Summerland
13„C,, and is one of a series of
products intended to increase
apple growers' returns from
processing varieties,
The apples are washed and
cored; then they are immersed
in a dilute salt solution to re-
tard browning before blanching.
Blanching is accomplished by
holding cured fruit in a high
vaernun for I t mintoes then re-
leasing the vacuum with hot
water. After about 10 minutes
in 15r) degree F. water the fruit
becomes saturated and sinks.
When this happens the fruit is
adequately blanched. The hot
water blanch prevents browning
or loss of flavor during freezing
and storage.

ed apples inay he filled with
