Everyone in the business is
becoming excited about the
new fall season on CBC Tele-
vision. The CBC is promising
great things, as an introduction
to Centennial Year and a be-
ginning for COLOR. Among
the many outstanding shows to
be seen in fall series are some
fine Hollywood movies on the
series "Great Movies". The new
season gets off to a roaring start
this week-end (the 3rd) with
one of the best Cole Porter
musicals to be produced in a
Hollywood studio, "Can Can",
in sparkling color, starring
Shirley MacLaine, Frank Sin-
atra and Maurice Chevalier,
with its lovely Paris scenery and
fantastic costuming. Other
productions to be seen include
"Station 6 Sahara", starring
Tuesday Weld; "Call Me
Bwana" with Bob Hope; and
Jackie Gleason, Steve Mc-
Queen, and Tuesday Weld in
"Soldier in the Rain".

There will also be top pro-
ductions shown on "Friday Night
at the Movies" on some CBC
channels. Highlights are "El-
mer Gantry", the picture that
won Burt Lancaster his Oscar;
"Days of Wine and Roses", the
gem that won nominations for
both stars, Jack Lemmon and
Lee Remick; "The Great Es-
cape", starring James Garner
and Steve McQueen; " A Sum-
mer Place" with Sandra Dee
and Troy Donohue; and "PT
109" , President Kennedy's story
with Cliff Robertson in his role.

Don Messer and his crew are
back home after a successful
summer tour that took them
through Quebec and Ontario,
meeting their fans and enter-
taining the public. Don reports
that it was a fabulously success-
ful tour, the group packing in
audiences in arenas, auditori-
ums, and outdoor parks. In
Peterborough they even set an
attendance record previously set
by western star Gene Autry.
The tour was not without ex-
citement. In North Bay, while
the show was in progress, the
police were searching for a
bomb that they had been warn-
ed was in the building. They
found no bomb and Don and the

The screen lost one of its all-
time greats last week with the
death of actor Francis X. Bush-
man at his home in I lollywood.
The kids of today won't have a
clue who he is, but mention his
name to the oldtimers and they
will remember him as a great
star of a number of years ago.
He has not been a 'star' in re-
cent years, but he has made
guest appearances on television,
and has added charm to every
show on which he has appeared.
