Travel Notes from J. H. Currie 4! 64 4 4 August 8, 1966 SS Shalohm Today it is the Island of Pal- ma da Mallorca. A very rocky place extending irregularly for quite a distance. We docked about noon. Bus trips had been arranged. Such a crowd wait- ing for bus, I elected to forego, Went for a walk on my own. Need the exercise. Lots of old walls here too. Quite an area near the bay is in ruins. Could be the ravages of war. Streets are narrow and steep mostly. There are some modern boule- vards with plenty of traffic. Al- so, many large modern hotels and apartments. Most build- ings are of stone. I saw one being built of cement blocks; another of concrete hoisted with an old-fashioned crane. The building sites are mostly at the bottom of the hills. Sonic arc cut into the face with series of steps leading up. There are tables and chairs outside the bars with awning overhead, We leave here for Naples tonight sometime. Left at midnight. Watched them pull out by tug. Took about an hour. Harbour looks beautiful under the lights. The Juan Matu Valancia pulled out just before us with all lights gleaming. Looked very im- pressive. Have a ticket for ex- cursion from Naples tomorrow. May go to the Isle of Capri. August 10th, SS Shalohm Naples Harbour. Docked at 10;10 ae rn. Passengers go ashore. The trip to Capri has been cancelled, as ship was late arriving. May go ashore after lunch just to look around. This is a large harbour. Much docking space and many ships. Four American "Men-of War" are docked across the bay. The buildings look impressive from here. No war damage visible. Went for a walk in vicinity of dock before lunch. Very warm. Sat in a park for a time then went back to ship. Many people had gone off so I was able to get in on first setting. After lunch went on tour to Pompei and around down-town city. Streets are narrow; traf- fic congested. The road to Pompei is made of asphalt. Most of the others are still cob- blestone. The ruins are impressive. Buried under 31 feet of lava about 3000 years ago, flowing • from Vesuvius ten miles away. Most of it has been dug out, land restoration is still going on. Some of it to the original style I using different mate''al in places. We were taken through a jewellry factory. The jewel- lry is made by hand. Didn't buy any. The land is different from that about Lisbon. Looks productive. Mostly gardens, vegetables and fruits. No stone On our way now to Greece. Left at 7:30 p.m. August 11th SS Shalohm Last night we went through the Messina Strait, between Sicily and Italy. Went up on deck at 4:30 a.m. Supposed to be spectacular. Just two rows of lights, one on each side of ship. Passed through about 5 a.m. After being up most of night, slept most of today. Wind is the highest it has been so far on trip. Weather has been good. No rain and not too hot. The boat is air-con- ditioned in places. Tonight has been a gala night. Sort of a farewell dint ner with pomp and ceremony. We had Hawaiian wine and caviar. Didn't care for either. Cornish hen with dressing (half a broiler). Sort of an ice- cream cake and coffee. I was satisfied. Several pictures were taken of our table along with waiters. Hope I can get a couple of them for keepsakes. The girl next to me speaks Eng- lish and is from New York. The others jabber away in some oth- er language. Money for the cancelled trip to Capri has been refunded. Bought ticket for another trip. This one to Daphni. Ship sup- posed to dock early at Piraeus 6 a.m. This will be an all- day tour. Then on our way to Ilaifa. August 14th SS Shalohm The end of the voyage. We dock in the morning. Quite an experience. Suitcases all pack- ed and in the corridors ready for the porters. The corridors are so full of luggage we can hard- ly move. Many of the passen- gers are remaining in Israel and they have a great amount of luggage. Will likely be a has- sle getting away, and time spent in standing around wait- ing. There was a "Good-bye pro- gram". Issued diplomas to the successful students of the Ile- brew class conducted on board for the last two weeks. Then they chose a Queen of the Ship. The judges were six men cov- ering ages 20 to 30; 30 to 40; 40 to 50; 50 to 60; 60 to '70 and 70 plus. As no one volunteer- ed for the latter, I took it on. We hurl the r' Dice of three la- dies frc.en the audience. I chose an elderly lady. She was from New Jersey. The ladies had to gig their names; where they from and how they enjoy- ed the trip, and why they were coming to Israel. There were seventeen of them. A very in- teresting cross section. Two were from Canada, two were travel agents on a scouting trip, four were young girls coming to stay, two of whom were teach- ers and two were going to at- tend University. The others were mostly tourists. Then they had to walk around the stage. Each had a number. A girl from California won the vote. Did not get her name. She is a qualified teacher. She plans to attend college in Israel and stay to teach. Two princesses were also chosen. One was from Manhattan and the other from Montreal. They were given presents. The Queen received a jewel box; a bottle of cham- pagne and a bottle of French bath perfume. The other la- dies received a hook, Tales of Neptune. • • 6=0 PAID ON GUARANTEED TRUST CERTIFICATES • issued 1 to 5-year term. • earn 6 1/2 % interest, payable half- yearly by cheque. • authorized investment for all Canadian Insurance Companies and trust funds. 372 Bay 54, 35 Dunlop St., 73 Mississaga E., Toronto Barrie Orillia Regular $209.95 SALE 149.95 PRICE MODEL 22-26 DELUXE WITH SIMPLA•PILTER • Exclusive—Live filter action Exclusive—Dual • control pump timer • Exclusive—Power pump • Exclusive—Chrome wringer top and hand rests • Exclusive-5 large 2" casters * Six Vane Metal Agitator * 4 Large 2" Casters * Live Filter Action * Dual Pump Timer Control * Power Pump * Chrome Wringer Top and Hand Rests * Heavy Duty, Large 21/4 " Rolls, Double Action Release * Large 11 lb.
