The Wingham Pee Wees won
the Simcoe Legion Trophy last
Saturday in a Pee Wee Tourna-
ment held there. The trophy,
emblematic of the Consolation
champions, was accepted by
team captain Barry Gardner and
presented by W. C. Perkin of
Simcoe.
Wingham dropped the first
game to Downsview by a 5 to
4 count, which put them into
the Consolation round of the
tournament. They dumped
Fisherville 8 to 2 in their next
game and then Woodstock by a
9 to 4 score before edging Al-
derwood 4-3 in the Consolation
finals.
LEAD IN SIXTH
Wingham picked up two runs
in the first inning against
Downsview but the Toronto su-
burb came back with two runs
in the second and collected
another in the fifth to take a
3-2 lead. The locals went
ahead again in the sixth on a
triple by John McKenzie and a
home run by Carl Mowbray.
The lead was short-lived as
Downsview came back with two
in the last inning to edge the
Pee Wees 5 to 4. Donnie Mur-

WIN SECOND GAME
Almer Ackert pitched a one-
hitter in the second game
against Fisherville and struck
out four as the locals upended
Fisherville 8 to 2. Ackert also
led the Wingham batters with a
home run and a single. Mow-
bray connected for a homer and
single and Elliott Courtney add-
ed a triple and a single for the
winners.
PULL AHEAD TO STAY
IN THIRD INNING
Billy Kirkpatrick and Mow-
bray paced Wingham on the
semi-finals as they both slapp-
ed out a home run and a single.
Brian Boyle added a triple and
three singles and Barry Gardner
hit a homer for the winners.
Wingham picked up three first
inning runs on Gardner's round
tripper but Woodstock came
back with three in second. The
locals pulled ahead to stay in
the third, scoring a run and add-
ing one in each of the fourth
and fifth innings and three in
the sixth.
WIN IN FINALS
In the finals Wingham scor-
ed early as they picked up a
run in the first on two walks
and a double but Alderwood
counted two in the second. The
Pee Wees tied the score in the
fifth and both teams added a
run in the sixth.
The locals put Alderwood's
first three batters out in the
last inning and scored in their
half of seventh to win 4-3.
Courtney led in the seventh
with a single and moved to
third on Donnie Murray's dou-
ble. Boyle singled but Court-
ney was put out trying to score.
Almer Ackert doubled in Mur-
ray for this winning run to cap-
ture their second trophy in as
many weeks.
The trophies are on display
at the Wingham Meat Market.

Reavie, Ivan Gardner and Bob
McKenzie for the use of their

Mae West looked and acted
like a typical dumb blonde
much of the time, but she was
no slouch, believe me. She
had a real knack with comedy,
and that takes more than tal-
ent; it takes brains, Her first
stage success was called "Dia-
mond Lil", and she not only
starred in it, she also wrote it!
It went on to become the hit
movie "She Done Him Wrong",
starring, of course, Mae West.
Our comedians, Johny Wayne
and Frank Shuster, paid tribute
to Mae West in the last of their
'Affectionate Look' series on
last week's "Show of the Week"
(and the last show of that ser-
ies). They showed scenes from
"She Done Him Wrong", in ad-
dition to "I'm No Angel",
"'Klondike Annie", and "My
Little Chickadee".
Paramount movie studio in
Hollywood was about ready to
fold when they introduced Mae
West; she skyrocketed the stu-
dio to fortune and Mae West to
fame, and it was more than
talent. It was good planning.
Her famous line "Come up and
see me sometime" branded her
as a sex symbol, but actually,
she was good no matter what
she attempted. She was beauti-
ful, but she was also a fine
comedienne, and tried her luck
at singing. Her slapstick com-
edy, though couldn't hold a
torch to W. C. Fields, her co-
star in 'Chicadee'. True, she
may have had the last word,
but his was the performance
you remembered.
Wayne and Shuster's "Af-
fectionate Look" shows are now
being shown on CBS in the
U.S., a summer replacement
series, "Show of The Week" in
Canada is being replaced by a
U. S. series, " Summer Music
Hall" which stars John David-
son, and special guests.

Switching from Mae West to
another man's "sport", the reg-
ular-season Canadian Football
League games will soon be be-
ginning on the CBC Television
network. The games will all
be carried live, which means
some of the western games will
be starting at our beddy-bye
time! The opening game will
be telecast on August 13th at
8 p.m., and will feature Cal-
gary at Haniilton.
The following games will
be: August 20, Toronto at Ham-
ilton, 8 p.m.; August 27, Cal-
gary at Edmonton, 11 p. m. ;
September 10, Hamilton at Ot-
tawa, 2 p.m.; September 17,
Ottawa at Vancouver, 11 p.m.;
September 24, Saskatchewan
at Hamilton, 8 p.m.; October
1, Montreal at Calgary, 11
p.m.; October 8, Winnipeg at
Ottawa, 2 p.m.; October 15,
Montreal at Toronto, 2 p.m.;
October 22, Hamilton at Mont-
real, 2 p.m.; October 29, Tor-
onto at Hamilton, 2 p.m.
It seems almost ridiculous to
be giving shows that will ap-
pear at the end of October. But
before you know it it will be
Grey Cup time, and we'll won-
der where the summer went!
Although all of these games
may not be carried on local
CBC channels, it is almost cer-
tain that the eastern ones will
be.

Speaking of entertainment,
hich is supposed to be the duty
of this column, seems to me I
eard of some groups in West-
rn Ontario who think that there
is entertainment and fun in
breaking a piano into tiny lit-
tle pieces. Good for a few
aughs, I guess they think! Sot-
y, friends, but I don't agree.
If you must have your kicks,
why don't you get your hair cut
and see how many buckets it
will fill! This 'fad' started with
college kids in the U.S.; I had
an idea Western Ontario heads
were more level and had a bet-
ter idea of the value of culture.
To the masters who provided us
with our greatest music, an in-
strument was a gift to be cher-
ished and respected, not a toy
that you took an axe to, when
the mood hit you! Smarten up,
kids; utilize that excess energy
to do something useful!

On Thursday night of last
week the Wingham Brophy
Goodyears defeated Clinton by
a score of 10-2 in seven inn-
ings.
The game was called at the
end of the seventh when third
baseman Jim Bain noticed what
looked like a small fire at the
back of Beaver Lumber. In the
short time it took to run to a
phone at the home of Charlie
Lee, the fire had broken into a
conflagration. With umpire
Wes Simmons and Coach Gord.
Welwood leaving as firemen,
the game was called.
Jim Bain was the top hitter
of the night with a double and
2 singles while Ed. Cronin had
three singles.
Barry Gibson allowed 7 hits
to the visitors but kept them
scattered to allow just the two
runs.
