Peden Capture Consolation Championship at Woodstock Tournament
LOCAL PEEWEE fastballers captured the
Harper's Trophy for consolation winners
in a tournament in Woodstock Saturday.
With the trophy are Barry Gardner, Carl
Mowbray and sponsor Jake Jutzi, of the
Wingham Meat Market. Team coaches are

The Wingham Pee Wees
captured the Consolation cham-
pionship at the 9th annual
Woodstock Pee Wee Tourna-
ment. Preston upended the
locals 2 to 0 in the first game
to put Wingham in the consola-
tion series but from then on
there was no stopping them as
they breezed through three oth-
er teams en route to capturing
the championship.
In their second game they
butchered Hespeler 16 to 3 then

ahead in the fourth on a two
out single by Ackert and a
home run by Kirkpatrick,
Alderwood threatened in the
sixth when Corkurn singled but
was caught stealing second. Al-

Pee Wees Lose
Opener to Atwood
The Wingham Pee Wees
opened their 1966 season June
10 in Atwood and were defeat-
ed by a 13-7 count. Ron Scholl,
Atwood's pitcher limited the
locals to only five hits while
striking out 14 and walking on-
ly three. Dale Long led the
Atwood team with a single and
a home run. Scholl also con-
nected for a home run for the
winners.
Wingham was paced by Ron-
nie Murray who slashed out a
triple and a double while Jerry
Marks and Don Shropshall each
added a double.
Atwood jumped into an ear-
ly 4-0 lead in the first and add-
ed three more in the second to
put the game out of reach.
Wingham pulled to within
two runs of the winners scoring
twice in the sixth, making it 8
to 6 but Atwood came right
back with five runs in their half
of the inning and held Wing-
ham to one run in the seventh
to pick up the win.

The Brophy Goodyears will
be hosts to the Clinton Inter-
mediates at the local park this
evening (Thursday) at 8,,30.
Lucknow*was to have play-
ed here last night but that team
has dropped out of the league.
Some of the Intermediate
games have been rained out,
as was the game scheduled for
the Juvenile Girls last Friday.

In the final game the Pee
Wees collected only six hits
but good pitching by Ackert and
strong defence limited Scar-
borough to only four hits and
didn't allow one runner to get

Donnie Murray pitched a
five hitter and Randy Hafer-
mehl drove in four runs with
three hits as Wingham crushed
Brussels 15 to 6 in W. O. A. A.
league play last Wednesday.
The win moved Wingham into
third place with a win and a
loss. Atwood and Myth lead
the pack with 2-0 records.
The Pee Woes pounded out
18 hits with Hafermehl pacing
the attack with a home run,
double and a triple. Tommy
Lee slammed out a single,
double and a triple while Barry
Gardner added a triple and a
pair of singles.
Brussels jumped into an early
6-3 lead after two innings but
the locals exploded for six runs
in the third and six more in the
fifth, to secure the victory.
Murray pitched six innings
before being relieved by Torn-
my Lee. Murray struck out
nine and yielded two walks in
the six innings.
The next home game islune

ing champion Atwood team.

run early as John Leitch singled,
moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt and scored on a single by
Kirkpatrick. They added an-
other in the fifth when Leitch
got to first on a fielder's choice
and moved to third on a single
by Brian Boyle, and scored on
Ackert's hit. In the Wingham
sixth Gardner walked, moved
to second on a walk to Ronnie
Murray. Gardner moved to
third on a wild pitch and stole
home. Murray also stole home
Defeat Ripley
By 10-1 Score
In Ripley on Saturday night
the Wingham Brophy Goodyears
defeated Ripley 10-1.
Gord Cerson led the Good-
years at bat with a home run
and a triple. Jim Rain and Ken
Saxton had a double and a
single apiece.
Bill Hotchkiss, pitching for
the Goodyears, allowed only
two hits.

edged Alderwood 6 to 5 before
blanking Scarborough 5 to 0 in
the finals,
Aylmer Ackert gave up ten
hits in the first game to Pres-
ton, while the Wingham club
collected only seven, Pres-
ton's first run came in the
fourth inning on a single and a
double. They added another
in the fifth on two singles, a
walk and another single. The
Pee Wees best hit was a two
out pinch hit double by Paul
Douglas.
DEFEAT HESPELER
Billy Kirkpatrick led Wing-
ham in the second game with a
grand slam home run and a
single. John McKenzie slam-
med out a two run homer and a
single while Carl Mowbray,
Donnie Murray and Brian Boyle
each collected two hits.
Murray pitched a three hit-
ter while striking out three
Hespeler batters and walking
only one. Hespeler grouped all
three of their hits in the fourth
inning after Murray had retired
the first nine batters in order.
The Pee Wees jumped into an
early lead scoring five runs in
the second inning on two hits
including Kirkpatrick's big hit.
An error on Ackert's hit and
walks to Barry Gardner and Ian
Shepherd loaded bases and
scored on Kirkpatrick's long hit
to left field. Going into the
sixth with an 11 to 3 lead the
home team retired the Hespeler
batters in order and rallied for
five runs in their half of the
inning to put the game out of
reach.
BATTLE ALDERWOOD
The locals were in trouble
in third game against Alder-
wood in the first two innings
but after that settled down and
facing elimination made a
great comeback from behind
victory to earn a berth in the
finals.
Alderwood loaded the bases
in the first inning with two out

as did Elliot Courtney after he
had tripled with only one out.
In the final inning Wingham
got the Scarborough batters in
order on an outfield fly, a pop
to short and the final out on a
ground ball to third before base-
ball gloves were flying in all
directions.

to Simcoe this Saturday and I

back as successful as they were
in Woodstock.
