When your sows talk,
it's time to listen...
because they'll tell you the best way
to get bigger, strong litters
Well conditioned sows give you more live, healthy
pigs at farrowing time. In tests at Purina Research
Farm, we found that an extra 25 lbs. of dry sow
condition meant 1 extra pig per litter.
Purina Sow Chow mixed with your own grain, helps
build body condition in sows and gilts so you get
those extra profit-making pigs. For those important
few days at farrowing time, feed Purina D & F Chow,
a cooling laxative ration designed
to help keep your sows healthy
and on feed, while the pigs get
off to a good start.
Try feeding your sows on the
Purina Program. Let the results
show you how it pays off in
strong healthy litters.

LINURON plus ATRAZINE
THEY GO BEST TOGETHER
With Linuron plus Atrazine on corn, you capitalize
on the best characteristics of each herbicide.
• If you are planting corn on corn and you have
problems with annual grasses and resistant weeds —
use a combination of Linuron plus Atrazine.
• If you want to rotate your crops (because of
corn rootworm build-up for example) — then it's
safe to use a combination of Linuron plus Atrazine —
or Linuron.alone.
2 If you missed the pre-emergent application —
then use Linuron alone as a directed spray when corn
is 15" or higher.

DR. R. W. SHEARD, O.A.C.
Department of Soil Science
It is a widely accepted fact
that potassium promotes the
winterhardiness of legumes, The
winterhardiness of legumes de-
velops during September and
early October. It is also known
that grasses can take up more
potassium than legumes and
that the grasses compete with
the legumes for potassium when
a mixed stand is grown.
A study conducted by the De-
partment of Soil Science, On-
tario Agricultural College,
showed that the first cut of an
alfalfa-brome mixture consist-
ed of 2,000 lbs. of alfalfa and
1,375 lbs. of brome per acre.
Due to the higher potassium
percentage in the brome, how-
ever, 33 lbs. of potassium per
acre were removed by each
species. During the last growth
period of the year from late
August to freeze-up, the growth
consisted of 95 percent alfalfa
because the brome was essent-
ially dormant. As a result the
alfalfa had no competition for
potassium at the time of the
year when its demand for potas-
sium to promote winterhardi-
ness was at a maximum. Only
16 lbs. of potassium would be
removed if the half ton of for-
age which was produced during
this period was harvested. If it
was not harvested all the potas-
sium would be washed from the
top growth back into the soil
following the death of the tops
after freeze-up.
It is therefore recommended
that potassium be applied im-
mediately after the last harvest

gates in his Royal York Hotel room. Mr. Thompson told
the delegates he found the party "bubbling with a new
