Construction of a new, six-
inch watermain to service the
hill area at the north end of
town began Tuesday.
Built by Mowbray Construc-
tion for the Public Utilities
Commission, the new main will
be buried under the Maitland
River beside the new Hanna
Memorial Bridge, site of the
former McKenzie Bridge, re-
moved last week. The new
bridge honors the late M. L. A.
John W. Hanna.
Completion of the job at
this time represents substantial
saving in costs, because the
contractor will be able to take
advantage of a coffer dam be,
ing built to facilitate bridge
construction.
The bill area has previously
been served by a 4-inch water-
main loop, Commission mem-
bers feel the new water line
will provide far greater fire
protection and supply bill area
residents with an alternate wa-
ter supply in the event of shut-
off for any reason.
Forms for the new bridge
footings are already under con-
struction as crews take advan-
tage of this spring's first major
break in the weather.
Plans Progressing
For HS Addition
Continued from Page One
committees from Wingham and
Lucknow have met with the
Huron and Bruce County con-
sultative committees and it is
expected amalgamation plans
will be presented to County
Council in June. Tentative ap-
proval from the Minister of Edu-
cation dissolving the two separ-
ate districts has been received.
The secretary read a letter
from the district high school in-
spector referring to legislation
which outlines procedures for
naming schools and school
boards. It appears that the
school itself, when amalgama-
tion with the Lucknow district
takes place, can be known as
the Huron-Bruce Secondary
School, but the school board
will have to be known as the
Huron-Bruce High School Board.
The letter referred to a motion
from the April meeting when
Lucknow and Wingham board
members met and suggested the
board should be known as the
Huron-Bruce Secondary School
District Board.
As a result, an amendment
to the motion was passed.
John Taylor, chairman of
the cafeteria committee, said
that his committee is investi-
gating recommendations made
by the County Health Unit for
changes in the cafeteria.
Mr. Madill reported that the
vocational advisory committee
met and recommended that
next term the room under the
library be used as a mechani-
cal drafting room, and a teach-
er hired for this subject. The
board approved the recommen-
dation,
The principal reported that
Grade 8 orientation nights will
be held on May 19, 18 and 19.
He also said sun screens were
damaged by freezing rain but
insurance coverage will take
care of the cost.
The board agreed to the can-
cellation of open house this
year.
Small financial grants were
given to students taking part in
various summer activities. Paul
Tiffin will attend cadet camp
in. either Banff or Barbados.
Edith Austin of Turnberry and
Donald Rae of Wingham will go
to Ontario Athletic Leadership
Camps and Peter Callan will go
to Manitoba under the Centen-
nial Travel Plan. Ruth Sinclair
of Wingham and Archie Mc-
Donald of Brussels will attend
the United Nations Seminar.
The principal reported that
Mr. Wood is taking students
who organized the science fair
to the Canadian Science Fair at
Windsor.
Resignations of three staff
members, Mr. H. Cree, Mr. G.
Price and Mrs. R. Panarisi,
were received and accepted
with regret by the board.
